I was also pretty cold about the writeup until you got to how overreactive of criticism and even generic comments he is, you should put a bigger emphasis on that, look up more idiotic reactions towards random users. While the context is nice, it takes too much space do far. Any personal life spergery outside the game? Any previous projects?

Nah, this game is a mess of power abuse and harassment. Kinda disappointed there isn't a big thread about it already. Two of the hackers bullied me and my friend a long time, abused their powers as judges, and no one did a thing. Recently, both our accounts got hacked by most likely them, too.

Oh man I loved this game for a while in college. Best fun I ever had was roleplaying as "sanic the hurdgehurg" and getting lynched immediately. I honestly thought acting like a sperg and a troll was basic-bitch-tier Jester tactics, which should have insulated me from being hanged but I guess nobody in random-queue has their brain switched on.

I bought the Coven expansion, foolishly believing it would make the game more interesting. First off, getting into a game was nigh-on impossible. No one would play any other mode but Custom, and after reading the OP on the game's creator I now understand why. When you do get into a regular game as a Coven member, you'd better hope you're on a team that knows what they're doing. There's only three or four of you, and it's far too easy to get merc'd by a Mafioso, Townie, or neutral Chaos or Killing. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Coven introduced the Pirate class, right? Yeah, that shitty class who goes around challenging people to rock-paper-scissors every night. As if we needed another Neutral killing class.

That's why I voted the way I did in the poll: playing anything other than a self-interested killer or chaos role is no fun. It's seriously up to chance whether or not your team is A) all present and not AFK and B) paying attention to the game. I only ever played it with my friends (trying to add someone as a friend, by the way, used to be a royal pain in the ass) and when one of us either died or got lynched in the first two days we'd either all leave (which ruins the game for the rest of the town) or that person would be forced to sit out unless there was a Medium in play. The Coven, by the way, does not help the game at all. It just turns into Mafia v. Coven (v. Vampire sometimes), recruiting the Serial Killers, Arsonists, and Pirates to their respective sides while the Town runs around with their heads cut off.

And nobody likes the Werewolf class.

(Oh I forgot to mention: the Coven also introduced a bunch of shitty Mafioso roles that were basically Town roles but for the Mafia. One of them was the Cleaner, and if the Mafia got him on a random support role, the Mafia essentially win. He can make a person's body unidentifiable, making it impossible to know their role. He also blanks out their Last Will, so if they kill your Town Investigator, you're finished.)

Sorry for the necropost, but I was about to make a ToS thread and decided to double-check there wasn't one already and saw there was in fact one (just newfag things)!

Anyway, I have an ungodly amount of hours and still enjoy it quite a bit. They've been adding a couple of Coven DLC roles to the base game which is kinda eh since the roles they added are not my favorite, but they at least can make things a little more interesting. I would say my favorite role types tend to lean towards Town Protective and Town Killing, but I also play a mean Jester (have the most wins with that role). My biggest complaint with the game is you run into way too many retards or throwers. It can definitely make some matches very hard to enjoy. And also the fact they have had multiple data leaks/hacks over the years.

But something that makes up for it for me is some players will say some of the absolute funniest and unhinged shit or things just play out perfectly with the names. Examples below:

I'm not gonna complain about the Necro, because jfc it's been a while since I've thought of this game, and I'm one of the suckers who gave money to the Card Game version - it's not bad, btw, but good lord did it not translate well into an irl game, unless you have a fuck huge group. Which then leads to long as fuck games, where the dead people all just sit there with their thumbs up their asses for upwards of an hour...

But I still remember my one highlight playing this game - was back at the height of the "John Cena" meme, used that for my character name and got Jester. Serial Killer killed the Medium, cause Medium always dies Night 1 for some reason, left the meme as his Death Message. Just immediately went "I regret nothing" in chat and got lynched to win - hilariously, managed to get the actual SK with the Jester Kill.

It is always so satisfying seeing people's reactions when they realize they just lynched the Jester. My favorite Jester win was actually when it was down to five people and I had convinced people I was suspicious and got lynched. I then proceeded to unintentionally kill the Arsonist who had ignited the other three people that night. So the game ended with only me winning as Jester, which I had never seen happen before. The chimp out was so, so worth it.

Sounds like they couldn't take a joke, and got what they deserved. :story:

One of these days we should host a forum version of the game. I've seen that people have tried to do so in the past and it did not work out, which is a shame. But it would definitely be fun as hell if it did kick-off.

But to remain more on topic to the actual game, I had some absolutely wild matches last night. Three Serial Killers, a Werewolf, AND an Arsonist. I know that's just how chaos mode can work but town and mafia were FUCKED. It didn't help that town were absolute retards that round, but I doubt we would've won regardless - still a very fun match, though.

Sorry for necro, but I've played the game since even before Coven existed, and I've gotta say, the game's really boring outside of Custom due to how mechanical it becomes (I remember the last time I played, which was probably around 2020, the meta was basically: Jailors outs D1, LOs confirms the TPs, and after that it's just a matter of time until the evils roles get found out; unless Town was filled with stupid players, which it was 75% of times I've played. Even the mode that was supposed to spice things up called "Traitor" had this problem too).

I remember it briefly having a "competition" of sorts called Throne of Lies back in ~2017-2018, which seemed to be interesting on paper (more complex roles which allows people to lie more than TOS) except that game's basically dead (it went free and even that didn't save it from being the definition of a lobby waiting simulator; then again, the gatekeeping players probably didn't help it survive).

Now it seems they're making a clone of Amogus with ToS's skin, since that kind of social deduction games is what's popular now at days.

Edit: I did have fun games though. I have one report against me (REALLY old one, before jailor meta was a thing) because people were mad I correctly assumed who the Mafia were as Jester (I claimed Sheriff and had guilty reports on them because my idea was getting an innocent townie just to cause chaos; it backfired horribly because Town ended up winning and I didn't even get lynched as a compensation for getting all the evils out).

Getting reported like that as a jester is like winning a razzie or something. The whole point of jester is to piss people off or trick them into lynching you, and getting rage reported is as pissed as people can get in that game really. It’s too bad you didn’t die for it though, either by lynching or mafia killing you out of spite at night. The reactions to the game revealing your role would’ve been priceless.

I stick to All Any because at least there's far more variety than the normal mode. Obviously still some shitty metas can happen depending on what roles pop in the match, but I still enjoy it quite a bit (though some shit can get really old).

I had a match yesterday with 2 Serial Killers, a Werewolf, Vampires, AND Mafia (though it was only a mafioso lmao, poor guy). Town still managed to win due to a very smart Veteran. It was pretty nutty.

Oh, I actually did get attacked, but the doctor saved me. People weren't even paying attention to the TIs, they just gave me the microphone and I'd (correctly) get people lynched. Seriously, that was the most anti-evil round I've probably ever played, and it wasn't even on purpose.

On a side note, it's funny how I have had like 20 reports against me (3 of which are legit and should've got me banned for a few days), and they all closed without judgement. Too bad they archive them now, some of them had hilarous games that I'd love to read again.

Yeah when I replayed ToS last year I mostly stuck to coven all any for that very reason. Since it usually takes two nights for meta defining roles like jailors to really get going, that still leaves enough time for early game shenanigans like a transporter swapping themselves with a quiet player that turned out to be a hidden jailor/mayor and getting them killed, an amnesiac remembering for a faction that's about to die off to give them a second wind, or every neutral killer under the sun shredding some cocky, pushy player that happened to be just a jester on night 2.

And with all any you get that nice wild card factor where you get unusual games like matches with a mostly evil starting town, towns that have multiple jesters/executioners, or towns/evils that ignore pirate until they plunder a crucial role. Just when you think you've seen it all, CAA one ups your expectations in the most ridiculous ways.

Throne of Lies owned. It is now entirely dead.

The barrier to entry was too high for new players. It would take...a lot of fucking time to learn all the classes and how shit interacted and also what you'd need to write in your journal to claim or fake claim. I'll take my fucking psycho king win to my grave though. Started as an alch now we here.

ToS is a bit easier to understand.

i remember playing this back in the days of yonder. i do miss playing it but not only are there not enough people playing it to justify doing a game, my nickname would get me cancelled as it was very offensive

Oh man, Throne of Lies, I haven't played it since 2017 or 2018, I liked it more than ToS and I agree it was hard to learn how to play properly.

Yeah, although the added complexity was fun. I can't really think of a role in Throne of Lies that I hated playing. ToS has a bunch of boring ones though.

The Drunk was my favorite role in ToL since you were immune to redirect, you could redirect people and also you could redirect people onto themselves. You had to fake claim in that role since evils would kill you because they feared your alcohol-fueled powers of just sitting on an assassin all game redirecting them into whoever you didn't like until you made them stab themselves.

I wish that game didn't die.
