Rei is a monster. People forget this and act like she's human. She's half alien, half Shinji's mother. She is no different to Kaworu. If you think she deserves a good ending then you missed the entire point of Rei. She is not human, she is not a child. She is a meat suit for an Angel to walk around in. Shinji clinging to his mother's autistic clone, with none of the personality or soul of his mother is not a good choice. Putting aside any of Anno's personal issues. Would you think it's a good idea to fuck your teenage mother with the soul of an alien in her? There's no good in any of that. Shinji picking Rei is either incest or xenophilia. Neither is picking a real human woman. And one of Eva's original core messages was "Human relationships are hard, they hurt and you have to open yourself up to that hurt or you never get any of the good parts". Rei is not human, Rei can never be human. She is picking your 2D incest waifu over a 3d woman. When Shinji picks Rei over the rest of humanity he is making a bad decision. And then when we see the effects later, Rei is just mass produced any way. She's still an alien, she's still a clone. His attachment to the fake doomed the real. And Eva has always said picking a bad reality is better than picking a comfortable falsehood. The fanbase is so autistic at this point it needs Asuka to scream it at you from a fan festival movie.

If she was a monster and meant to be all that you mentioned, then they wouldn’t have given her a character arc of learning to become human and being able to love and care for others like Shinji. The whole thing is that she’s not Yui or Lilith. She’s her own person.

Heck, the last Rebuild film even refutes the idea that Shinji was wrong to try and save her. Even going so far as to give Rei a chance to live as well.

I see her relationship with Shinji as simply two people connecting in a difficult time over similar interests and such in the second Rebuild film at least, where their relationship is more focused on than the one he had with Asuka in the original. It was through that that Rei learned that she mattered to someone beyond her intended purpose, and that she truly was irreplaceable.

Heck, the entire reason Shinji rejected Rei Q in 3.33 was because she wasn’t the Rei he knew and grew to care for.

Honestly, making it so that Shinji saving Rei apparently caused billions to die I found extremely insulting. Rei in that situation was essentially resigned to die, believing that she was replaceable and such, and yet she hears someone tell her that she truly does mean something to someone, and as a result is worth saving. That’s a message that I think really suits the series. That no matter your origins and feelings of self-worthlessness, you still deserve to live.

So for the third film and the like to instead make it an anti-escapism Aesop where she deserved to die because she represents Anno’s hated form of escapism in insulting.

But she's not a person. If you consider Rei to be a person then the Evangelions are people. She is a pocket sized Eva and no matter what she thinks or feels, she can never be human. She can never be a child who is born, lives and dies the way a human does. She has no mother, she has no father, she has no experiences of becoming a 14 year old girl. She just steps out of a vat and there she is. An alien in a human suit. Rei thinking she's human is like a man thinking he's a woman. He cannot be because you can't think or act your way out of your biology. You can't wish your soul to be something it isn't.

You’re way too focused on her origins here.

Rei’s character arc, at least in the Rebuild series, is her learning human emotions and feelings, the ability to love and care for those close to her, and ultimately, finding out that she does matter to someone, regardless of her matter or birth.

If anything, she’s a half-human hybrid learning to choose her humanity over her alien side.

I have no idea how that is the equivalent of a ma thinking he’s a woman btw.

She's a monster, she can learn to mimic humans but she's still a monster.

My example is why Rei will always be a monster. She cannot change what she is. She is a skin suit for an alien to wear. And that's it. Whatever she thinks, whatever she feels, she is just a skin suit monster.

Right, because all the moments she had of learning to connect with others, the blushes and smiles she gave Shinji, her deciding to fight for him so he doesn’t have to pilot again, and the ultimate conclusion she got in the last movie all mean nothing, purely because of her origins.

Never mind how those emotions she feels and her character growth are genuine and not something an emotionless monster would feel. If she was just mimicking emotions, I doubt she’d go so far for Shinji.

It doesn't matter how she feels. She is still a monster.

That is what Rei fans don't understand. Rei is always the bad choice because she's a rejection of humanity. The same way Kaworu is a bad choice. They are monsters wearing human skin. They can charm you, they can seduce you, they can fall in love with you but they're still monsters. Kaworu kills himself realizing what he is and what he could do. You're supposed to look at Kaworu and see his reflection in Rei. No matter what he does for Shinji or what connections they have. He's still an angel. Rei is still Lilith wearing Yui's skin. A hive mind creature with multiple bodies. She is no more human than the Evas or the dummy plugs.

That again completely ignores the character development Rei goes through and how she grows through her relationship with Shinji. Heck, it is partly because of her love for Shinji that leads her to betray Gendo at the end.

To focus so much on her origins and to completely ignore everything else about her is an incredibly shallow way of looking at her character. Which, ironically, is what the third Rebuild film did.

More out of curiosity, but I'm wondering why my post was rated as dumb. I was just pointing out stuff that was literally said on screen.

People in this thread having long winded discussions about whether or not Rei and Kaworu are just monsters or can actually be human despite being partially angel is pointless when the official script tells you that normal humans are angels anyways. And I mean all angels (including humanity) use souls from the same source which is the first ancestral race from which they are reincarnations, the only thing that sets them aside is that different angels are equipped with different fruits like the ones of live or knowledge.

Sorry for any offense I may have caused, I just thought it was a somewhat simplistic label. IMO the Angels are the children of Adam and the humans are the children of Lilith so it's more accurate to say we're related than we're the same.

Just because Misato characterized it that way doesn't necessarily mean it's true. It could be, but only from a certain point of view. Angels and Lilim obviously have very different forms, like we don't have big red exploding sphere inside us and so on, so it's difficult to conclude we're literally the same thing.

Since you are a newfag I'm not gonna be mean about this, but when one or two people rate your post dumb and it bothers you, it's alot more appropriate to ask that person(/'s) on their profile or in a DM why they did, rather then inform the whole thread you got a sore clam from a couple of negrates.

The fandom was built on people who identified too readily with Shinji mistaking some pervert's cartoon for a rorschach. The culture is people pretending that they like debating the pseudoprofundities they've projected onto a cartoon more than gooning to the teenagers in it.

I mean Rei is partially a clone of Shinji's mom and also has parts of her psyche because Anno wanted to include the Ödipus complex in his show (lol), so the actual problem with the Rei shipping is that Shinji basically just turns into Chris Chan lite.

So, the vidya Neon Genesis Evangelion 2, those "Confidential Information" data files

SEELE

C. Confidential Information
An esoteric secret society born during the medieval Dark Ages and originally a religious order. Slowly but surely, they extended their influence, until at last they crushed the final forces of opposition in the mid-20th century and became a latent power with covert rule over human society.
Final forces of opposition crushed in the MID-20TH CENTURY, huh? I wonder who those forces were... hmmm... Shinji may be the protagonist of NGE, but the hero of NGE is obviously... well, in the new series I can't wait for the Nazi Eva, piloted by a Hitler dummy plug, to come out of the Chamber of Guf to fight alongside Shinji-7 against Judeo-SEELE

Eh, a lot of her character development shows that she’s her own person distinct from Yui, which is also one of the points that Shinji even brings up in the last Rebuild film.

Gonna be a long shot tbh but I was wondering if by any chance someone was able to archive the video of this Tumblr user playing "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" on a toy piano which spawned some Rugrats memes.
