He's a bit more than a monster of the week. He shows Shinji "unconditional love" - which is quite toxic, especially to Shinji. Of course it's just to manipulate him, and then he forces Shinji to kill him, which drives Shinji's mental state in EOE. Kaworu really fucks Shinji up.

I agree that he didn't deserve an entire movie, but there are a lot of girls who like boy love, and a lot of suppressed gay guys, who love the idea of Shinji and Kaworu together. I think there is more official merchandise with Shinji/Kaworu than Shinji/Asuka.

I understand a bit of why Anno wrote himself into a corner when making 3.0. Shinji is in space, presumably we don't see any kind of Rei at all, so two of the main characters are completely gone from the story. So you've got Asuka, Mari (who the writers had a terrible time with according to the wiki, and she's too similar to Asuka in many ways)... and the adults of course.

If Anno had just said "screw it" and gotten his staff to do a few shorts like -46h or even -120m (which isn't even animated, it's just manga with a voiceover) explaining what the fuck happened, that would have been an improvement. But that would require him to figure out what happened and that takes work.


There's some speculation based on the trailer that we'll either see new characters, a reimagining with the same characters, or the missing 2.5. In other words nobody knows what's coming.

Thus, making Studio Khara's statements about how this special "would never see the light of day" a total lie (unless they plan this from the beginning to do this to gain publicity, but who the hell knows at this point)

They must have planned to let the special leak out to the public, all while "claiming" it would never see the light of day again, to gain free advertisement.
They had to know this would happen.

No, because the people who DMCA'd this wasn't from Khara, it was from a legal company they hired.

I remember the subtitle issue where the entire script for 3.0+1.0 leaked the day of it's theater release. So I think it's more likely they honestly just don't know what the fuck they're doing.
 
The EoE is a bit too tainted by developer spite for me to truly like it. It's batshit crazy and quite funny, but even the rushed original ending is more respectable than the "Oh you didn't like my first ending, well fuck you then" tantrum movie.

And the rebuilds are so hilariously tell-don't-show pretentious you could almost take them for a comedy, except the CGI was so horrendous it's not even good as that. What do they think they can accomplish with another new series? Especially these days where even good anime are looking more and more ass in the animation department.

I assume it'll be a total arthouse approach. Yoko Taro specializes in these bizarre stories where utterly embraces the absurdity whilst keeping the tongue-in-cheek comedy in its own designated zone. In nier a lot of this manifested through the joke endings, which in the anime adaptation were made into shorts shown after each episode, kind of like Ghost in the Shell's Tachikoma skits. If nothing else I think it'll be an interesting spin on it.

Definitely a marketing campaign. They hyped up a bad short video and said only TRUE fans could see it and only at this limited time/place. Then oops it leaks and now it'll be on youtube in a few days. All marketing.

My thoughts on the short? Utter waste of time. The best part is the end credits song. Everything else is just disgusting fan service. "lol Asuka is naked" doesn't work as a 15 minute joke when for the last 30 years you've sold sexual Asuka merchandise. Mari/Asuka shipping bait because of course they want to keep the shippers arguing for another 30 years.

The animation is distracting in places. They put new animation over old footage and it looks like someone put clip art over it. Really badly done blending so it stands out.

I was disappointed because I'd heard it was Asuka's view of instrumentality and what her choice would be. But it's a 15 minute comedy sketch pandering to the worst of the anime fanbase. It's short enough not to be a huge time sink but there's nothing here worth seeing. There's an anima joke but they don't even fully lean into it and that's like 2 seconds of footage. Probably more if you care about the extended universe but it's 4 second jokes and no depth

Read the last few pages as I was avoiding spoilers for this.

Rei is a monster. People forget this and act like she's human. She's half alien, half Shinji's mother. She is no different to Kaworu. If you think she deserves a good ending then you missed the entire point of Rei. She is not human, she is not a child. She is a meat suit for an Angel to walk around in. Shinji clinging to his mother's autistic clone, with none of the personality or soul of his mother is not a good choice. Putting aside any of Anno's personal issues. Would you think it's a good idea to fuck your teenage mother with the soul of an alien in her? There's no good in any of that. Shinji picking Rei is either incest or xenophilia. Neither is picking a real human woman. And one of Eva's original core messages was "Human relationships are hard, they hurt and you have to open yourself up to that hurt or you never get any of the good parts". Rei is not human, Rei can never be human. She is picking your 2D incest waifu over a 3d woman. When Shinji picks Rei over the rest of humanity he is making a bad decision. And then when we see the effects later, Rei is just mass produced any way. She's still an alien, she's still a clone. His attachment to the fake doomed the real. And Eva has always said picking a bad reality is better than picking a comfortable falsehood. The fanbase is so autistic at this point it needs Asuka to scream it at you from a fan festival movie.

I hope someone shoots me for discussing eva shit on the internet. Jesus christ I hate eva fags.

Those ending shorts are called omakes and have been in use for decades by various manga and anime series.
