The Democrats Won’t Abolish ICE
When immigrants are under attack, what do Democrats do? Not much. At the time of writing, there is a partial government shutdown that has halted funding to the Department of Homeland Security, which houses ICE, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and other agencies. This is only a partial shutdown, though, because earlier this month the Democrats passed a spending bill that funded all other parts of the government, which essentially gave up any minimal leverage they had. What’s more, ICE and CBP both have more than enough advance funding from the “Big Billionaire Bill” to continue operating seamlessly.
The Democrats are demanding “common sense” reforms to ICE, the rogue military force occupying cities, shooting protesters, and kidnapping our neighbors. Their demands include body cameras, banning of masks, and requiring ICE officers to wear identification—pitiful reforms to an agency that needs to be completely abolished. Even if the Democrats were to win the measly reforms to ICE they’re calling for, Trump and ICE have shown they’re more than willing to break the law. While some Democrats, like Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, are putting forward proposals to “abolish ICE,” many more are calling to “abolish Trump’s ICE,” indicating a desire to run ICE on their own terms.
Under Trump 1.0, a few Democrats were in favor of rebuilding ICE “from scratch” in the leadup to the 2020 election, including Kamala Harris. But later that year, the Democrats voted for a bill to continue to put billions of dollars a year towards ICE. In his final year in office as president, Biden pushed through a spending bill to put a then-historic $3.4 billion towards building detention centers where hundreds of thousands are being detained today. Establishing ICE in 2003 was a bipartisan effort, and it’s been a bipartisan effort to maintain.
But it’s at moments like this—when workers in Minneapolis are going on a general strike against ICE, tens of thousands of students are walking out, and mass protests are erupting across the country—that we see where our power really lies: the collective power of working-class action. The working class kicked Greg Bovino out of Minneapolis and ended the ICE operation, not the courts or the Democrats. This is the movement we need a new party to be based in, and this is exactly the type of movement that the Democrats are scared of because they know that it goes against their pro-business interests as well. That’s why we need to build a new party, independent of the corporate Democrats, to build the fight to abolish ICE today.

The Democrats’ Track Record On ICE
The Democrats are under pressure from the growing anti-ICE movement to look like they’re putting up a fight, like Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Frey saying “ICE needs to get the fuck out.” But where was this energy when the “Big Billionaire Bill” put $170 billion towards DHS last summer and the Dems put up no fight? Where was this energy when the Democrats were in office overseeing ICE throughout the past two decades? This is far from the first time the Dems have tried to co-opt the movement against ICE for their own electoral gains.Under Trump 1.0, a few Democrats were in favor of rebuilding ICE “from scratch” in the leadup to the 2020 election, including Kamala Harris. To Abolish ICE, We’ll Need A New Party
While they’re riding the anti-ICE wave today, we can have no faith in the Democrats to negotiate on behalf of our movement because of their alliance with the interests of the anti-immigrant billionaires, which is expressed in their meager proposals to reform the deportation machine. The Democrats will say that we need to vote for them in the midterms to fight Trump, but when in power, the Democrats continued to fund and support ICE, leading to mass disappointment and Trump gaining more power. But it’s at moments like this—when workers in Minneapolis are going on a general strike against ICE, tens of thousands of students are walking out, and mass protests are erupting across the country—that we see where our power really lies: the collective power of working-class action.
