That shit is maybe a shade above "and then a skeleton popped out."
I guess what makes me bitter about stuff like Jeff the Killer or Sonic.EXE or stuff like that is that there are glimmers of a decent story that could come out of it.

A tale about how an innocent person gets involved in a horrible incident by mean-spirited and heartless individuals and turns into a warped human being that perceives everyone to be as twisted and cruel as those that hurt him.

A story about an unnatural game disc that subtly alters itself in such a manner that it drives fear and confusion into the people exposed to it, but isn't blatant enough that the person ejects and destroys the disc out of its sanity, but instead causes the person to believe he's overly paranoid.

You can make shit like this work. You can turn these into legitimately terrifying stories. Instead, not only are they left in their current forms, but there are seriously ardent fandoms everywhere that claim that these are timeless stories that are in no need of improvement.

And seriously, if you think Sonic.EXE is a brilliant and flawless work, you definitely need to read more.

I once had an idea for a story where the author in-story used to be friends with a weird autistic guy who was obsessed with hacking games to freak people out, going so far as to sell his hacked copies to used game stores.

I thought it was a clever twist on the typical "haunted vidya gaem, 2spook" because, really, as you said, there is potential in the idea, you just need to bring something original to the table. I even bothered to do research so everything that happened in the story could have been, theoretically, be replicated with the right tools.

I remember when I first joined the Creepypasta fandom and it was all about some unnerving and weird TV episodes that were supposedly cut and some occasional horror stories about anomalous things in the forest.

And now it's yaoi art of a tale of a guy who I swear to god 99% of the Creepypasta writers only cling to out of nostalgia and/or its significance as one of the first Creepypastas and not because the Jeff the Killer story was any fucking good.

*sigh*
Yknow, Jeff the killer always really bothered me because it does have an interesting concept, it just does it horribly. Like Jeff progressively becomes more and more of a violent person as the story goes on, until he becomes disfigured and finally snaps and loses all empathy. But my main problem is that in the story Jeff just sorta wakes up one day and suddenly starts having urges to hurt people, and thats what the whole story is based on and why I dont like it much. IMO It really would've been a much more interesting story if Jeff had a history struggling with psychotic behavior/urges and the story was more about him gradually acting on them more and more until he finally becomes a vicious serial killer or something instead of just "jeff suddenly wanted to hurt people, bullies show up and Jeff hurts them, bullies show up to a child's birthday in broad daylight with fucking guns, Jeff beats them up but gets lit on fire, Jeff kills his family"

I would read that story. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper creepypasta without a twist. ;)

I was toying around with a twist but couldn't find something I liked, which is why I never finished the story.

I like creepypasta and fanfiction because of the creativity and potential, but it is a double edged sword as it also opens the floodgates to crap. There have been more then a few stories that i wanted to like but couldn't get past the writing. And yet I stick around digging through the rubble because of a few gems that are pretty good.

I see most of the crappier fanfics and pastas as being a wasted opportunity, since in the hands of the write author almost any idea can be made great. I think most of them need to take some time to research and investigate what is possible in the mudane for more inspiration. Instead of overusing the same ideas over and over and over again (looking at you slenderman, copycat the killer, lost episodes, generic.exe, etc)

One idea I have about improving the sonic.exe creapy pasta is to play more on the mudane of what is actually possible for malware to do but play on the ignorance of the protagonist who misunderstands and assumes magic.

Most computers have a webcam but it is possible for the webcam to be turned on and spy on you and it has happened before. Like maybe have it be developed by a very creepy stalker. The program could have keylogger functionality and the protagonist can start recieving creepy emails from someone who knows him all too well. Like maybe from someone posing as a childhood friend since online you can pretend to be whoever you want. The protagonist could be someone who is already on edge. The one who developed the program could be a creepy stalker or part of a chain of creepy stalkers who plays on the it is magic angle to make things appear worse then it already is. With a more interconnected world, there is endless possibilities for stalkers.

Also sonic could start taking over your computer with "Sonic" appearing on your computer. In the 90s there was a companion called "Bonzi buddy"
He will explore the Internet with you as your very own friend and sidekick! He can talk, walk, joke, browse, search, e-mail, and download like no other friend you've ever had! He even has the ability to compare prices on the products you love and help you save money! Best of all, he's FREE!

I like your story better than the original.

I like this idea too!

There actually is a Pasta like that, but its about those "haunted" episodes and movies. I think its called Sids video or something, but long story short its about a guy who had an autistic friend who was obsessed with cutting and editing video tapes. He starts out doing it because he wanted to change the endings of sad movies but he eventually ends up stealing tapes from video stores, editing to make them super disturbing, then returning em just to fuck with people. Its actually a really interesting story if ya can find it.

These guys tried to start shit on the Ben Drowned forums I mod

http://ben-drowned.wikia.com/wiki/BENs_Life
http://ben-drowned.wikia.com/wiki/Listen_to_me
http://ben-drowned.wikia.com/wiki/BENs_Feelings
http://ben-drowned.wikia.com/wiki/The_Banished_Ocarina

They tried to start a "wiki war" with us even though we aren't a wiki
They think that BEN has taken over the forums and we're all corrupted or some shit
I'm not sure whether they're roleplaying or not
There is a whole wiki for that one story? It isnt even in depth enough

Actually the ben drowned story had an elaborate ARG tied to it, which kinda explains the existence of a wiki for just the one thing
but that wiki isn't the "official" ben drowned wiki, it's some knockoff made by crazy 12 year old fangirls

Starting an entire wiki on one pasta is ridiculous. How did that even happen?

At the very least Jadusable recognized the fanbase turned into cancer and trolled them all with that kingkong video. That was amazing.

What kingkong video? Even he had to break ties with his legacy? I'm grateful that Jadusable wroten BEN Majora's Mask. I'm not so grateful for the fanbase that ruined it.
