Would doing a curse-ye-ha-me-ha work just as well as screaming expecto patronum? I'm pretty sure they would freak out, thinking you're performing a curse.

Curse-ye-ha-me-ha is a privilege not a right, use it responsibly.

Tell me that again and I'll curse-ye-ha-me-ha you. Joking aside, one other thing I can guess of in freaking the people out is saying pocket sand and trying to throw it though not try to hit anyone. They might think I've actually casted magic when in reality I tried to do what Dale Gribble did.

Indeed. If it's not brightly colored sand, than it won't have any effect in freaking them out. For added effect, maybe dressing up as a wizard Dale Gribble could help.
