Another day, another video essay. This one, however, shits on the tuber tumors and competitive players, so I watched it. The moment the Harbleu chant appeared on the screen I knew I was going to enjoy the rest of it.
I was watching his Meet Your Match video and he mentioned Uncle Dane's video on #teampyro.
He is right it is really bad, fixing the flamethrower does not need a whole update, and getting rid of the Pyro thing of being a jack-of-all-trades class and specializing is stupid.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Johma and Uncle Dane are cousins, I remember Dane mentioning this during one of his videos (it was during a story about their old letsplay channel featuring iCucckz, Dane and their group of friends.)
While I agree that the general idea of balancing a game around comp when comp and casual are such disparate playstyles and the comp players are already happy to just mantain a banlist on their end is pretty dumb, the sandman absolutely deserved the nerf it got that of all weapons is not the one to be defending.

The simplest answer would have been to have 2 different balance tables, one for basic casual and one for competitive, yet I have not seen a single fucking game even do such a simple task because the devs of 2010-2020+ are retarded for not considering long-term consequences of their own changes (same with the retarded playerbase).

Devs don't generally want items functioning completely differently in different environments like that. I think CSGO did that for a time price wise and everyone hated it, though the actual functionality of that price edit was definitely to blame too.

I think it just depends what your focus is. In a game like CSGO, where casual and competitive are still ultimately playing the same game, it makes sense to balance predominantly for the top level while still checking up on lower ranks somewhat to make sure there's nothing in the dreaded category of "Too hard to counter at low level, too easily countered at high level" a la the CSGO semi auto snipers. In a game like TF2, where comp is essentially playing a different game since they want to run it as an arena shooter, balance mostly for casual since the comp people will just make a banlist anyways.

the core issue with le comp balancing (or simply banning weapons) is also the simple fact that instead of looking at the gamemode that makes more sense in this game (highlander), the only thing that was seen was 6v6, and don't think it needs to be said that it has a very high skill floor, it's utterly autistic, and the average pub player does not give a singular shit about communicating to begin with, it was doomed from the start and he's got a perfectly fair point in shitting on 6v6 players and youtubers that shilled it.

but in terms of explaining what's fucked in terms of balance he's a complete and utter retard on the basis of:
  1. pissing and shitting himself on changes that either make sense (especially the sandman, crit a cola, guillotine and maybe the GRU), or are mostly irrelevant or niche (the base and the YER).
  2. omitting several changes that don't make any actual sense whatsoever (ex. the amby and the eviction notice)
  3. not understanding that the dragon's fury is mostly disliked because it's a janky piece of shit.

He is right it is really bad, fixing the flamethrower does not need a whole update, and getting rid of the Pyro thing of being a jack-of-all-trades class and specializing is stupid.
The specialization argument was lifted straight out of the mouths of comp players, as that was the shilled rhetoric by 6s autists. Their favorite classes get to be generalists, while ones that make them stim out are to be turned into specialized pick classes. Was retarded back then, still retarded now.

I've never had a problem with using or playing against any of the mentioned weapons except for the Sandman. I just don't like movement impairing mechanics in general when they don't come at a cost, see also the fucking Loose Cannon that stops you in place. Dragon's Fury is fine, just needs some more fixes to make it work better around map geometry. YER was fun before the nerf as well, RIP.

Even more simple answer is to let people who think a casual shooter should be player competitively self-segregate and have their own promod with custom balancing. Multiple communities are doing the same now and they're attracting their own audiences as a result, for example the HiGPS Balance Mod and some Fish TF2ber server. Not gonna happen, obviously, because compfags subsist off gibs provided by game companies and viewers.

since balance talk, more power to you in your experiences, the warranted nerfs still didn't kill the weapons in question and they still do a lot by themselves, but you cannot tell me that the sandman + flying guillo wasn't absolute cancer to fight against, or the crit a cola giving free speed, damage and no falloff to the fastest and possibly second hardest 1v1 hitter in the game without any noticeable drawbacks wasn't an assblastingly retarded idea.

loose cannon is a schizophrenic gl though, mostly due to the funny knockback behavior, but still very inconsistent unless you start double donking things non-stop, and yeah the df is one of the strongest pyro flamers, but the main problem outside the fact that it's very autistic to learn, is the huge-ass fireball that blinds you and makes it unclear as fuck if it's a proper followup or not.

YER is YER, wasn't that hot of a knife to begin with, and it became dead on the spot the moment people figured out that you just have to listen for any stab sounds in the vicinity, the disguise thing just makes it so that you get something to start with, and the extra cloak drain can mostly be coped with l'etranger.

also i forgot about the bonk, but the bonk is an huge whatever on a fundamental basis, it just punishes retard nigger plays now.

I like this guy, he's totally unhinged. Anyone who calls Uncle Dane a gay balding retarded midget is a-ok in my books
He forgot to call him a cuck, too. He ran some stupid mario channel with friends and gf, then one friend stole his gf and married her. After which dane wished them well lol. But I will take a balding retard midget.

The cleaver itself really didn't even get nerfed outside the removal of the sandman combo, which I attribute more to the sandman than the cleaver. No more minicrits at long range, instead replaced with faster recharge on long range BUT the new definition of "long range" is like half what it was before. It's still 50 damage+40 bleed up front on a fast moving hard to see projectile with no fall off, and I think it's still banned in comp because scout really does not need the help especially at that range.

My usual scout loadout is stock, cleaver, wrap assassin. It does an imitation of the old sandman cleaver combo since the bleeds stack, and I get good results out of it. Using a normal pistol (or the mad milk, which is one of the only items I'd say is genuinely overpowered in casual AND comp) would be more convenient and easier, but my ceiling is def better with the big knife. It is funny how the sandman nerf made people realize that the wrap assassin is actually good and wasn't some terrible joke melee a la the sun on a stick.

edited it, so made it more clear i was talking about the crit, but still it's why i mention that these changes didn't kill these weapons, outside of the sandman, these weapons can still attain their batshitness in terms of power.
the guillo is fundamentally flawed on the basis of it being the easier to use version of the pistol, and unlike soldier, scout doesn't give a shit about buildings when he's picking fights or flanking, so it doesn't really have any weaknesses outside of "don't miss lol".

shockingly pubs aren't known for their braincells, and you could say that the wrap is the relatively balanced brother of the guilliotine, since unlike the latter, the wrap has an actual cooldown to work around, and doesn't deal a fuckton of damage per successful hit.

also yes, the mad milk is incredibly retarded as a weapon and the fact that it didn't get nerfed (hell last time it got touched was when it got buffed instead) shows the quality of the players, the tubers and the developers when it's about balancing this game

The bit you quoted probably had crit-a-cola in mind. Yeah it was stupid good at first but barely anyone used it since on release it costed 1 scrap to make, and that used to be actually worth something. IIRC by the time it became widespread aka added to drops it had already been forgotten and powercrept by mad milk which caused infinitely more seething from asspained pyros and heavies.

Mad milk is such a stupid name for it too, I hated it from the very first day it was announced. ‘Mad’ milk? What’s so mad about it? Was it so important you had to name it with this preschool level alliteration? It’s not even funny or even make sense, might as well followed with Krazy Kola and gory guillotine.

The joke is that it's a periodically recharging white "non milk substance" that sticks to everyone it coats.
It's Scout's cum jar
1711028011641.png
It was also originally a little more on the nose.

I know about the whole ‘lol it’s cum’ thing, but it doesn’t make the name any better. I’d even prefer Mann milk because at least it’s more on the nose.

It’s like calling jarate ‘loopy lemonade’. Either commit to it or don’t, valve.

Sadly, trannies and faggots have been botting TF2 for the worst
To my knowledge the only tranny bothoster was nullified, who was the project owner for cathook in the first place.
Every other hoster is a nazi, retard, pedo, russian, in it for the money or a mix of the aforementioned.

The trannies and faggots are trying to counter the bots with "community anticheats" because its an easy way to gain control and leverage over the community.
Your hate is misplaced, trannies for the most part like this game because they've effectively hijacked it, and see no reason to bot lobbies.

Meet your Match update was the final nail in the coffin for this game. Adding competitive and casual modes was the most retarded thing they could've done. Almost every major problem today's TF2 has stems from that update.

Community servers becoming graveyards made everything even worse. Not only are most of them dead outside of the usual suspects, there are now quite a lot of fake proxy servers that take you to the same couple of real servers plaguing the in-game browser. Some French faggot hosting Fastpath is the worst offender currently.

I still blame Pinion Pot O' Gold for ruining TF2's public server browser.
Back in the time before quickplay, there was a server host called Pinion. Pinion discovered a way to make their MOTD, which covers your entire screen and stops all gameplay, intrusively stall your gameplay with an unskippable 15-second ad every few minutes. This was before adblock was even really a thing, so nobody had even figured out how to make a TF2 equivalent yet. Pay for premium, go ad-free. More users paying for premium = more servers, meaning that real quick, the only servers that were ever full AND on the top of the server browser due to some font bullshittery were Pinion Pot O' Gold. This in turn likely was the driving force behind quickplay, because if there's one thing Valve can't stand, it's people making money off their product. As a result, custom servers, custom maps, cool gimmicks like TF2Ware, Prophunt, etc., and a lot of the god damned SOUL of TF2 were nixed in one shitty update where TF2 tried to "get with the times" and pretend to be like one of the innumerable contemporaries that can't go the distance. When we FINALLY have a postmortem of TF2 once the servers finally wheeze their last and the eastern european bastards who destroyed quickplay finally leave for some zoomer brand game, I will say as I always have: TF2 was killed by TF2's own community.

I started playing when Quickplay was already a thing, but I remember seeing the Pinion hate in YouTube videos at the time. Was disabling HTML MOTDs not an option back then?

TF2 was killed by TF2's own community.
TF2 sometimes tries to come back to life, but the community just starts kicking it back into the grave. Being a one-of-a-kind multiplayer game is a curse. You just know that, if another developer ever attempts to make something resembling TF2, it's not going to have a community server option on par with official ones and they'll add an industry standard rootkit anti-cheat into it.
