Tir’s mellowed out somewhat but it’s still not a place to visit if you’re not an elf, or on business.

As is, Bunraku Parlors as a Johnson Meet location aren’t exactly going to send me the right message as a runner. It’s going to make me ask the same sort of questions as wanting to do a meet at a brothel, namely “just how professional is our client and how professional do they see us as.” Even if it’s a great fixing location, it’s also sketchy looking. Reputations mean a lot and there’s a good amount of distaste toward Bunraku clients, which isn’t a shock and why pretty much any parlor is going to be a prime location to collect blackmail. Unless it’s a really really damn high scale location I’d be of the opinion to decline the meet. Or at least suggest a different location.
Agreed on that, since you know the dude who's asking for you is likely a scummy character. If the hired help leans Black hat, they're very good recruiting spots regardless, since a parlor that abused Black Mail is one where the owners get murdered by their own product.

It's a dumb idea to play the black mail game unless you're certain you have the assets and ability to enjoy it.
The best place to meet is behind a Stuffer Shack, by the dumpster where the Beetleheads chip up and that one tweaker dances for chits.

The gunfire and the raving of the schitzos will cover your conversation, you don't mind Mr. Johnson brought Corp Security, and he doesn't mind you brought a troll with a Panther Cannon.

Then, when the deals done, you can grab a few Captain Dizzy slurpees and get going back to Puyallup.

Insteresting one I had a GM do was Mr. Johnson met us at a gun range for rich weirdos. He wanted to see the weapons we were packing and had some smartgun chips he wanted us to slot and walk us through the new interface.
Yeah, the back alley behind a fast food joint or a Shack is the best spot for early runs.

This makes me kind of want to play, but I know without fail that any GM who volunteer will cuck out and ditch like a bitch. It's happened so many times it's not funny. It's why I had to run my own damn Cyberpunk 2020 game after all too.

If you've run this, you'd be more likely to rent a lookalike to fight.

Shit, I know they're old modules, but you really wanna throw some curveballs, do this:

Maybe add Harlequin's Back.

Run all that shit on them, and they'll get it.

Never deal with a dragon, never gamble with an elf, and never assume you know everything that goes on in the shadows.
Oooo, what a treasure trove! Thanks, Uncle Johnny!

It's kind of sad that even though cyberpunk settings seem like they'd be the realm of edgelords and fedora tippers, there's an inordinate number of troons and dangerhairs that are interested because of the magic plastic surgery and anarchist bent who just completely miss the actual themes of cyberpunk universes. Hence, you get a bunch of cuck GMs who sanitize the fuck out of the setting and it ruins the whole thing.

They're all kind of missing the edge that the late 80's/early 90's had.

Those early modules could be a mind fuck.

Little hint for those of you who play Shadowrun or GM it: In the back of the Native American Sourcebooks, both of them, are adventures. They're REALLY good ones.

I haven't bought anything for Shadowrun since 2E, so I don't know how the nations are treated now, but those old Native American Sourcebooks are fucking gold.

If you're really into SR, and play a lot, and have a good GM, the 1E and 2E sourcebooks are a fucking treasure trove of "historical" data for Shadowrun.

Anyone who plays Shadowrun and doesn't know about the Chicago Containment Zone is someone I probably wouldn't play with.

Well, the most important thing is Aztlan kicked Amazonia's ass, then the Yucatanis seceded leaving them begging Amazonia for help with it for some reason. Someone on the writing team in 5E had a chubby for Asamando so there's a wealth of stuff on it now. Otherwise most people I talked to say things are about the same as they always were. The NAN occasionally pokes at the UCAS and CAS and runners shut down a new Ghost Dance every other month, the PCC can't get it together, the Tirs are marginally less assholish but still ethnostatists, the CAS are full bore into their cowboy LARP for some reason and the UCAS are still sucking the ghost of Dunkelzahn's cock while President Davier (who by this point has been in office longer than Joe Biden) is taking her marching orders from the Draco Foundation and not fucking anything up too badly.

Well, I'm doing a 5E group. I started in 4th so I haven't touched anything from 3rd and lower, but I'll see if I can get copies of the books you suggested. I'm afraid of 6E since it was written when clown world was in full swing, so I doubt it'll be a worthy installment as far as the plot goes. The people playing are a bunch of shadowkiddies, so they know very little about the setting so far. I will show them...yea...they will learn in time...

EDIT: But Ares is taking the Containment Zone back, bros! Any day now! Could even be tomorrow!

I know that Shadowrun is quite a popular game for cyberpunk, but I would like to ask what everyone thinks of Cyberpunk, 2013, 2020, and Red.

I personally think the splatbooks of 2020 are great, and really help flesh things out.

All I know is the video game sucked. @Adamska , you're up to bat.

Or better yet, let them know that, no, they can't go to Portland.

It's owned by elves.
Perhaps the greatest irony of my one primary (because I've really only had one or two games) SR char is that despite being an elf the man's hatred for both of the Tirs is off the charts, and he's this close to going full-blown Clayton Bigsby and joining Humanitas because his own kind can't help but fuck things up for everyone around them thanks to their absurd racial arrogance. Imagine just trying to live your life calmly and coolly when half the news relating to elves is the latest fuck-up out of the two Tirs. FUCKING KEEBLERS, MAN!

And yes, I've heard of Chicago. Not sure if bug spirits, a nuke, and cannibal ghouls taking over Cabrini Green are all that much of a downgrade from contemporary Chicago.

What sort of idiot would willingly slot a chip like that into their guns?

We slotted into the range's guns.

We figured that he figured that we'd figure he was out to screw us somehow and so he figured that we'd figure we'd outsmart him by bringing in our secondary weapons instead of our running weapons.

Shadowrun's great for "I know that you know that I know that you know that I know that you... want to fuck me in the ass!"

Edit: Clip relevant. Someone has to play the part of Ralph, make sure it isn't your runners.

Ah, always smart. There's a reason my dude carries everything from from a few spare daggers to a Swiss Army Knife to a multitool to some hidden fighting blades to some grenades to three pistols (two main, one emergency handcannon), a shorty shotgun, and a rifle while on any sort of heavy run: Always Keep Your Options Open. And a WP nade is a lovely distraction for literally any situation where collateral damage is not a concern. Such as fleeing for your lives. No, I don't care that this is a residential neighborhood and there's kids around, not when the run to go kidnap an exec has gone beyond FUBAR and dogs, both spectral and material, are after us.

The one time I managed to play Shadowrun I fixed it with the GM so we could re-enact this exchange:

The game wasn't very serious, and it didn't last very long, but it was totally worth it for that alone.

I find it funny that Humanis is supposed to be this super evil organization, but with the exception of their occasional acts of terrorism they actually have a point. Elves and Dwarfs outlive humans by a factor of 60 or so years at the least, so if a human is working under one he's probably screwed for promotions if his boss has hit the Peter Principle. Orks and Trolls are bigger and stronger than humans by a mile naturally, and there's a reason there's a special "tusker" division in sports. No one except another of them could compete physically which makes it harder for humans to get entry level labor and security jobs and plenty are only too happy to live up to the stereotype. I'm pretty sure this was on purpose, but lately everyone just screams NIGHT OF RAGE, NIGHT OF RAGE like I'm supposed to care about imaginary people enough to actually get angry.

You're underequipped. Didn't mention explosive ammo or Stick N' Shocks (the #1 Spirit Defense System for Sleepers!).

Pretty simple system, high lethality, but hits both ways. It's a lot friendlier to enter IMO if you know what you're getting into.

Basically it's a 1d10+Attribute+Skill system where you have specific DCs to do things. It's pretty simplistic and easy to work through due to that. The biggest issue is that JUST LIKE Shadowrun, netrunning is so different from the base game and has annoying mechanics to it, you kind of have to completely rework it.

All in all it's a good game system, especially since it's a bit more open in what you do; you don't HAVE to be full on corporate spies and leg breakers; you can be anything from crank news source to cop unit out to solve crime to just plain gangbangers in the near future.

It's whores. Literally just whores. The exact same women with the exact same circumstances as any whore you're liable to meet today. Some are pros into it for some easy money, some are addicts who are getting strung along to fund their addiction, some are trafficked into it by criminals. The whole cosmetic surgery and personality chipping thing doesn't mean they're all slaves, it's just the nature of the job and those chips are only being used while they're working, they don't get stacked up in crates like Borg when their shift's over. Like Molly Millions pointed out in Neuromancer, she did that line of work for a while when she needed cash for her cyber and she considered it sort of a perk that she didn't remember what she was doing while on the clock.

Never played 2013

2020 was responsible for some of the best campaigns and characters I ever experienced, even if the system wasn't all that and a bag of chips.

Red is...fine. Seriously, it's fine. Not that remarkable, and it really is 2020's B-side, but it does it's job satisfactorily.

Chromebooks especially.

No need for explosive ammo when you've got Shock Lock rounds for the shotty. Count as explosive rounds, but also halve the barrier rating of doors and the like. And being over twice the cost compared to standard ammo isn't worth it when I throw 11 dice for every shooting attack and can do a narrow long burst for +5 DV after a run with zero penalties thanks to my setup. A White Knight does 6 damage and -1AP, so anything short of a heavy-duty security troll is going to have a very bad day considering he's just been slapped for 11 damage, plus the boost from net hits. Nothing short of a grizzled veteran can stand toe-to-toe, and he gets a second Initiative Pass from Wired Reflexes, so he can wear down anything short of the truly elite.

EDIT: By the way, this is just at game start, standard 1000 BP build, and my earliest attempt before I started figuring things out. The latest revision using WAR! in addition to Arsenal, Attitude, and Augmentation takes a hit to recoil control (but its not like nine is all that terrible) by swapping out the White Knight for a SCAR-H3 for an extra point to damage, and some realignment of points gets me an extra die pool for attacks to bring me to 12. Armor is a Victory Globetrotter Camouflage Jacket with a full SecureTech PPP Ensemble, ballistic mask, and helmet, so I rock 14 Ballistic/15 Impact armor with zero encumbrance penalties. The Take Aim as a Free Action ability from my Martial Art Style means I can always add the extra die from that so I'm really rolling 13 dice for every attack. 5 BOD plus Rating 2 Bone Density Augmentation plus the armor means I have excellent chances of taking little or even no damage from anything short of the heaviest fire, especially since 6 Reaction is going to take away a net hit or two from whoever is shooting at me, plus I can Run from cover to cover to an extra +4 to my defense pool, and that's without popping a Full Defense that lets me toss in another die to the "don't get hit" pool. Plus I've got the full suite of cyberoptic and cyberear modes so I can hunt you down no matter the conditions.

Melee combat isn't any better for someone since I've got 6 strength, so I hit like a truck, and Bone Density means my unarmed blows at 9 dice per attack deal Lethal, not Stun. For knife-work I pull out my claymore with a Personalized Grip to roll 10 dice on the attack and do 7P damage with a Reach of 2 and AP-1. The albino Liberian child soldier known as Mr. Lightning Bolt would finally find a worthy foe in my character. And no, I didn't get a nodachi or katana because fuck that weeb shit.

This bullshit up above, my fellow Kiwifags, is why I play elves in TTRPG's. I've got 50/50 odds of drinking a Dwarf under the table, even with the enhanced liver Shadowrun Dwarfs get, and can win an arm-wrestle your typical Orc afterwards. Yes, his Essence is shit from all the Cyberware, but a Rating 6 Medkit means anything but the most egregious wounds is but a scratch. And good luck egregiously wounding him.

the universal brotherhood link should tell most people all they need to know.

I can't recommend the novels enough, they're as old as the game so you know you'll get some good shit (however they are spoilery, but by now probably everyone knows what's gonna happen in 2055 in chicago).

which reminds me I never looked up how netrunning works in android (genesys) in comparison. but then FFG's retarded greed made sure the system never got widespread play anyway...

Cyberpunk Red attempted to overhaul the netrunning to make it far less intrusive, but the one game I ran didn't have a runner in the party, so I'm wondering how it works in action.

From what little I've skimmed (none of my players netrun either tbh), it's kind of similar to Shadowrun's old decking system where you have an elaborate mini session inside the session.

I'll be honest I'll probably just simplify or have the players just play as Daemon AIs (basically themselves but net formed) and do what they do online. I know a Netrunner's in the future for one of my players if their current character dies.

But the baby brains who got in due to Mercer can't grok that their character isn't them, and their morals don't apply necessarily in the setting. The moment they have to not play their CR rip-off character and have to play scum bags at all breaks their brain.

Its the "right side of history" the internet serotonin hit mob addicts are running on. Much like the religious right they say they despise, they cannot handle the existence of something that doesn't 100% allign with their worldview and morals.
