Copyright lawWhat legal leg does Nintendo have to stand on
The organizers are using a game and other IP which are owned by Nintendo or other companies. If the organizers went ahead and made their own platform fighter without using Nintendo's IP then Nintendo would be unable to do anything.random organizers that have literally nothing to do with Nintendo
Nintendo also has a reputation for strongly defending its properties to the point of going after its biggest fans and potential business partners.Copyright law

Running a tournament has nothing to do with copyright law. Maybe there's some hidden level of advertising that crosses the line, having a banner with too many of the characters on it or something, but the closest any tournament comes to violating copyright is having a large crowd watching the gameplay, which is still less violating than streaming your matches on Twitch would be.Copyright law

Not wanting to be associated with kid fuckers and foul smelling autismos, that leg. What legal leg does Nintendo have to stand on
Copyright law gives Nintendo control over how their game is used.Running a tournament has nothing to do with copyright law.
Most other games have communities who already work with the publishers instead of being entirely grassroots. When's the last time you heard of any tournament having problems because the original copyright holder threw a fit?
and then any community that was grassroots were shrunken down to nothing because they've been declared bigoted by the corporate run communities, you cannot tell me with a straight face that a community that has an "official discord server" is any different than this shitMost other games have communities who already work with the publishers instead of being entirely grassroots.
So it's just like Doom then?Melee isn't like DooM where the community keeps the game alive through new innovations and fresh levels every damn day. It's a stale game being played by autists who refuse to let go of their glory days of being good at a singular video game,
"New levels" and "new innovations" says otherwise. Doom's been around for 30 years and people are still finding new ways to work the engine and keep it fresh. There's a lot more to Doom, it's community isn't solely competitive like Melee's is, it's far more creative, and this also helps keep the game a timeless classic that finds news players constantly. That community is constantly finding new ways to get more out of the engine, improve the game, make new content, etc. It's a game that changes and evolves over time with its community and I would put money on it still having an active player base 20 years from now. There exists competitive aspects of the community, but rather than being the central focus, it's a component that works in tandem with the other aspects of the community instead of trying to be THE defining factor of it.So it's just like Doom then?
I feel a more apt comparison (especally since it was also made by Nintendo) would be Mario 64, as even though the game is the textbook definition of "good for it's time", there is still a community of people who are doing everything they can do to make the game's engine work as best they can possibly make it without compromising on the ability to run on an actual N64 (they are ROM Hacks after all) and making far bigger and more impressive levels that even a lot of the bigger named speedrunners of the game has played, meanwhile the biggest thing outside of the competitive scene for Melee was the online mod (for the Dolphin Emulator, not the game lol) that's only really touted as having better netcode than Nintendo games.-snip-
Brawl Meta Knight was pretty funny(Ultimate is just fine, it's not Brawl, you fucking cry babies) just fucking die.
I gotta be honest.I am really surprised nobody make pedo jokes in that tweet chain because by god if I had a twitter account I'd be making them left & right till they reported me. "The only game smash players universally enjoy is smashing kids." "Smash Brawl is just pedos fighting to see who gets to touch the kids next." On a more serious note, I'm kinda at the point where smash should just be managed just like competitive pokemon tcg tournaments. I may not like pokemon but that's one thing I like about pokemon over magic is that they had background checks for their judges in the first place. Literally do that for smash players at this point. So, someone made this tweet:

I figured I share a couple of responses it got:
That's because the industry treats niche stuff such as video games as "serious business," which explains bullshit like identity leftist politics and stuff which is why they're trying to collect BlackRock moneycalling video games a sport is retarded. every top smash player has the body of an avocado.
melee was fun back in the day and I see people have been modding characters and stages into it. but I guess there's some contention with playing modded shit through slippi because reasons. if you niggers hate nintendo so much then why obsess over the initial roster of the game?
I do not want to give any video game companies or tourney fags money.
Valve just did the same thing this year. They banned CSGU/CS2 tournaments from having monetary support or potential collusions with teams. Copyright law does affect some level of competitive play even through LAN tournaments with theoretically 0 valve support/assistance as Valve owns the license. Nintendo is just expressing their right as the copyright holder.Running a tournament has nothing to do with copyright law. Maybe there's some hidden level of advertising that crosses the line, having a banner with too many of the characters on it or something, but the closest any tournament comes to violating copyright is having a large crowd watching the gameplay, which is still less violating than streaming your matches on Twitch would be.
You think every LAN party has to get personal approval from each company for every single game that's played, to let people play their own video games in a somewhat more public space than usual? Because that's what a tournament is, all the players obviously have a copy of Melee of their own. Most of them bring their own controllers and CRTs because they're turbonerds like that. When's the last time you heard of any tournament having problems because the original copyright holder threw a fit? No, this is Nintendo trying to swing its dick around and control how its game is used in a world that's passed them by. Using vague laws and everyone's fear of being sued to try and control the narrative when they would lose any actual suit they tried to file. If they thought they could get away with just shutting these tournaments down entirely, they would, but they know they're more likely to scare people into not even looking at the law if they give them enough wiggle room.
Prophetic post right here from years ago lol, especially that last bit. Same problems from years ago with predators and sex pests still going on today too... God damn.Smash is a party game because it's aimed at children and easy to play, understand and execute.
If street fighter is a seinen then smash is shonen.
You can also look at the default rule set for the game which is 3 stocks with time and items which is incredibly uncompetitive.
However by the sheer power of autism and ego manchilds managed to create a niche community. Some autists always want to be the very best so they try to contrive the game to make it competitive luckly for them the engine's quirks allowed for some complicated mouvement options and cancelable moves. The sheer will of autism can greatly change the way a game is played. Look at chess, when it was created you played with a dice and it emphasized short term tactical plays rather than long term strategy and gameplans. However the sheer obsession of some made it in what it is today.
Nintendo doesn't approve the smash scene because the game is just a party game for them. They will only use the scene to promote new games and even then they will force them to play on their terms.
