Norwegians are also way more laid back and jovial than Swedes in my experience, but Western Europeans do have this weird resentment towards Americans and seem to have this innate need to feel superior. I come from an unhappily mixed family (American, but recently immigrated Norwegians and Swedes) and the superiority thing is off the charts, even though they are all American-born. Just walk into a Sons of Norway lodge and you get a 15-minute introduction session where everybody gives you their precise fraction of Norwegian, as if anyone really gives a shit. It's a heritage measuring contest. They can't speak Norwegian anymore, but our parents and grandparents did, and when folks from the Old Country come to visit, they laugh up their sleeves at the 19th century vernacular and anglicisms. The lodge closes with the dirge "Kan Du Glemmer Gamle Norge?" And of course nobody can.

I am half German, which renders me effectively a nigger in the eyes of my snooty, hatchet-faced Norwegian clan. Those women kinfolk could open letters with their noses, and their hair is Protestant rat color.
