Meanwhile in Syria, things are spiralling towards war between Russia and America.

The top brass of US military and Obama's administration are advocating for a military strike against the Syrian army, in order to prevent them from taking Aleppo from rebel forces. Reportedly, the only one who is objecting is Obama himself, but his time is running out.

In response, Russia has deployed S-300 SAM systems in Latakia, in addition to a S-400 already present at the Russian airbase there. Yesterday, the spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defence explicitly threatened they will shoot down any American plane targeting Syrian Army forces (original Russian link), saying any strike at the Syrian military is threatening Russian servicemen, and they cannot allow it.

It may be just a fluke that will wind down sooner or later, but judging by how rapidly things have escalated over the past month, I'm not really optimistic about it.

If they actually are insane enough to start a war, I wonder how many countries are going to get dragged to this fuckfest.

Christ almighty, I hope this doesn't happen.

I don't get why we are all against Assad. His regime is the last semblence of modernity in Syria, the last bulwark against the barbarism of ISIS.

If Hillary wins we are right fucked. I hope Trump wins

Possibly... all of them. But I doubt it will get this far even if Russia shoots down an american plane.
If USA does not respond to a downed plane, the rest of the world will pounce on them like wolves. The world hates the USA, they must project strength. On top of that, US ego is almost unmatched. A Russian attack on a US plane would definitely start a conflict, if not a war.

Of course they would have to react to something like that, however"nuklear strike against the Kreml" isn't the next logical step. After all, Turkey shot down a russian plane and Russia didn't invade Istanbul either.
I could be wrong but haven't the russians downed some american spy planes during the cold war?

It would severely fuck up the diplomacy between Russia and the USA, but even in the unlikely event that Russia downs an american plane (mind you, there's other options), the scenario that it would lead to a war is slim at best.

What has happened over the past days:
I think that since America is busy with formally handing power to the First Woman President, shit might hit the fan only in November-December. Still, anything is possible.

Actually. It wouldn't count in this instance. If the NATO power is the attacking one and gets it shit shot up then it cannot activate Article 5 as it was attacking a defending power that was simply protecting its assets. It's why NATO wasn't involved at all in the invasion of Iraq while it was involved in the invasion of Afghanistan (9/11 was considered an attack).

The USA might find itself alone, or with just the British backing them.
