Olympia is the state capital and on the East (red) side of the state. It's easier and more effective to organize right wingers to drive 20 minutes to Olympia then 3 hours to Seattle, and most would assume you're much more likely to be met with violence in Seattle.

Im from the uk and know about some interesting books used to come out on Olympia press, a university there (which seems to have descended into an utter hellscape, and i say that as someone left leaning myself), and that loads of good bands in the early 90s came from there.
i thought it was a pretty leftist but very small, back-of-beyond place.

its really hard to get an internal scope on how big/far apart places are in the US, and the intersection between them all.

Washington and Oregon used to be bastions of absolutist free speech. All the hippies that genuinely hated yuppies and loved nature ended up moving North, and a lot of those people were extremely tolerant of extremist viewpoints. It wasn't that weird to drive through rural Oregon in the 90s and see someone with a swastika on their car. The Aryan Nation had organized recruiting hubs there, and most of the publishing companies willing to print nazi propaganda were located there.

I'm not sure when and why that changed, but it definitely has changed. They're still tolerant of violent extremism and racial identitarianism, but only if it's beneficial to leftist politics.
