WOOO I did a redesign of this hot monstrosity. The screen shots used in this post were provided by doctorsanity, who submitted them to bikiniarmorbattledamage

Look, I’ve been employed as a designer for two years now, and maybe that’s not that long; I’m at least sure I don’t have the same kind of industry experience that the designers in charge of this train wreck probably do, but I do know one thing:

Design that fails to communicate its intended message is bad design.
It is, in my opinion, the chore element that separates what we do from Fine Art - fine art is a personal expression. Someone can argue with the conclusions that you came to in fine art but ultimately, it’s your territory, your message, your composition, your voice, your story.

When you’re a hired designer, everything changes. It’s their story, theircharacter, their message, their voice.

Putting aside the obvious pandering and intent to profit off of misogynistic ideals in female video game characters for just an instant, let’s talk about Charlotte.

Charlotte [evidently, from what I’ve admittedly heard through the grapevine; this game is not yet out in my country] uses a masquerade of charm and innocence to seduce men for their wealth. When I heard this, I was shocked, because from the moment I saw her outfit, she never looked like someone I could trust.

If she’s supposed to look demure, make her look demure, goddammit. You shouldn’t need a greenhorn like me to tell you these things. Learn to treat your female characters with more respect.

I hope OP realizes she doesn't respect female characters.

Edit : OP is actually male, which makes this worse because mansplaining.

Wouldn't that chest area still give a vibe of the part being a bit domed shape? Also, wouldn't the top part of a cuirass not work like that? I mean wouldn't the lames kinda get in the way of the lower plate (plackart)? Then again, some probably just think adding some plate or whatever makes the character look well-armored despite the fact that it could clash (or in a real life sense be impractical but then again this is a video game). And that response, wouldn't the whole "attract men for wealth" thing be flexible in some cases? Such as using other means of charming them besides looking demure? And iirc, isn't the character an axe fighter? Those sort of units aren't really known for wearing plate armor, are they?

Also forgot to say, the chainmail beneath that skirt not only looks lazily drawn, it looks like someone tried to shove steel wool up her skirt as though it's the reason why she is making that face.

That's a pretty nice looking design.

Someone needs to tell the artist that many men are attracted to women's breasts. Also, why wouldn't you trust her just by looking at her original outfit? Are you implying slut-shaming there?
I don't think axe fighters wear armor in the old games. Although knights can also use axe in some games, I think.

I don't hate the redesign; the intention bothers me more.

Charlotte isn't a "strong empowered female character" according to tumblr standards. She's manipulative and power hungry, but she's also described as a tough fighter.

Yeah, the intention is whats bothersome. I mean, the design isn't trustworthy? The hell does that mean? Plus considering the character, by what you say, she does sound like someone who is empowered if by simply taking opportunity and such along with being tough.

Now downloadable content is just as harmful.

We gotta keep in mind that optional costumes, unlike, say, fan mods, are still intended by the developers to be the part of the experience, sometimes even the selling point for some specific edition of the game. It’s just as valid to be critical of them as of the game’s marketing, even if (or rather, especially if) they’re not faithfully representing the game as a product.

That has more to do with fanmods giving men skimpy clothes (even if it's impractical) and that's ok (and there's no bitching about agency).

Considering Sherry being put in some different outfit, wouldn't one say it could have to do with something about a parasite her father infected her with in RE2 (especially if the parasite grew dormant enough to grow throughout the body)? Even then, in regards to alternate costumes, not only is that thing optional, it's not like some alternate stupid sexy outfit is mean't to played with ingame as though it were important. Sometimes, the experience with these is just having fun and the marketing for them would be done in trying to shill out DLC in hopes of people spending $5 for some alternate costume of a character. Who wouldn't want to play as a Road Warrior Chris and Tribal Sheva shooting a bunch of parasite infected people? Besides, the outfits would no doubt come with an actual benefit. Even if they were selling points for a game, that would just be in a DLC option that most wouldn't care about unless they really wanted it. If a complaint with Resident Evil has to do with how a character dresses, one would wonder if that really is suppose to mean anything compared to say using gameplay mechanics that literally suck (One wouldn't give a damn to Sherry's patient outfit compared to annoying as hell QTE's that end up in making one want to break their controller).

I already did comment (see the edit on my earlier post in this theead). She still edited it out and replaced it with this meme:
mansplain_2.jpg

She just pissed because at the end of the day, more people will have gotten a boner from any of the cheesecake art she bitched about than everything she has ever said or done in the entire span of her existence.

Search your feelings, you know it be true.

In case you're interested, here's personal RPG and product page. It also contains the games she's written like her sexy RPG parody.

They found out Quiet's big reason for dressing like she does and the result is "amazing".
Funny how none of these people point out the fact that liquid snake goes around bare chested in sub zero weather in the first game, or vamp the bi vampire wearing clingy and revealing clothes that offer no protection (well i guess him being immortal kinda negates the need for body armor but still), or raiden running around in high heeled boots and having impractical long poofy hair.

Because it's okay when men wear ridiculous and impractical outfits.

But isn't that exactly what she's doing? Trying to tell an actual artist what's what based solely on her conjecture?
Now that's another angle to look at it. If you look back at her meme, she's implying that I was trying to discredit her own "experience" with my comment...but what "experience" would that be? I know next to nothing about her personal life experiences.

But the really funny thing is that if you look at that blog post, you can see the link to my original comment (reposted on my own Wordpress) on her Pingback. And so far she hasn't taken that out yet. Someone slapped egg on her own face...
