Funnily enough, going by the two color swatches side-by-side, I'm pretty sure the fan artist's version of the character would actually look about the same, or maybe even darker, if you were to switch the colors to grey scale.

It's almost as if children on Tumblr have no understanding of color theory and are just itching to be the first to "callout" a racist or something.

it irks me to see people still complaining about marina’s skin color. marina just has a red overlay on her, god forbid, but pearl has a sort of yellow overlay on her and they didn’t give a shit about that. what am I going to do, just colorpick and keep marina’s skin tone like that for the whole picture? even if it would break the harmony of it?

Has anyone noticed how a good chunk of these artists who get called out for "whitewashing" are some dark-skinned race and/or don't live in the US? I know being anal about this is mostly a white middle class American thing but it's almost satire how they tell artists with dark skin the "proper" way to draw these characters.

Like an artist simply giving someone elf ears is not enough of a hint to what you're doing. For all I know queen schnoz is some derpy Drow reject, ain't no indication in the picture who that is outside the ears. Maybe a similar looking dress? Get the fucking eye color right? Skip the tow-hoop sticking out of the schnoz? Failing all that maybe a snarky tee-shirt reference that at least takes the audience in the same general zipcode as the character you're re-imagining?
 
For that matter, has anyone figured out why gigantic fucking noses are chic among Tumblr?

There are non-Jewish groups with humongous noses but they all don't look like they take up half the face in reality. Despite Tumblr claiming to be more realistic in cartooning, they can't seem to figure out how to make big noses look good.

The whole issue is that when something gets popular people want to do their own rendition of it. As an artist, you tend to like other people's art and when you like certain details you copy them. When you're younger this isn't a problem as many people do this as a sign of immaturity and admiration. You don't really understand why a certain concept looks good, but you try to replicate it because you want to copy that "coolness". It's the same as a kid on the playground trying to draw pokemon their own way.

The problem with these artists are that they're copying an already mediocre style ( I don't hate the style of SU but's not that great) and trying to replicate it without knowing why it looks good. Add onto the fact that SU has been praised for being the height of diversity for cartoons in plenty of "woke" articles. I wouldn't be surprised if in the echo chamber that is tumblr, people wanted to become the most "woke" by doing the same thing.

Really it's just setting a lower standard than before and once people make their crappy renditions, they can claim it's progressive and that you can't hate it because it's like another progressive show. Trying to tell them that copying an art style doesn't solve ANY of the major problems of sexism or racism in the entertainment industry just results in them bugging out and calling you racist.

It's the same reason why the people behind highguardianspice are freaking out on Twitter. I guarantee you they thought their nu-age cheap artstyle was the most progressive thing on the planet. When in reality, when everyone does it, no one does it well.

The Crunky roll thing really confuses me.

From Ghostbusters to StarWars to Marvel comic books. Starting from a SJW angel and building media around it doesnt work. And screaming about trolls when people critize it doesnt work ether.

The about of autism with anime is even worse they should have just showed a trailer for the show never shown the purple hair hambeast behind it and god forbid dont talk about SJW talking points just talk about the show.

SU works because it starts with its world and characters it has/had some mystery boxs and here there you get the SJW stuff and even then I think they were selfaware enough to have the plot call for it.

Why don't these people make their own OCs? They could even still be Legend of Zelda OCs instead of changing literally everything about the characters except for their names and calling it an alternate universe.

I'm starting to think none of these people realize they can make original characters and stories with diversity instead of trying to shoehorn it into an existing series where it makes no sense at all.

We've come full-circle where racist caricatures are now the standard inclusive and diverse art style.
 
Even if the humongo nose fetish is a rebellion against anime, why can't these artists look up actual pics of average citizens of the realethnik in question and not just go for "nose takes half of your face or more in all dimensions rule?"
