Most of the "stimming" on Tumblr is just kids seeing random fidgeting or stress behaviors (nailbiting, pen-clicking, leg-jiggling, chewing on a pen, whatever) as a sign of autism so now more people are making the stim "toys" to capitulate.

Well, in the case of actual severely autistic kids, it's a good thing because those kids will bite hard enough to break skin/cause extensive damage. There are some kids who, though they don't bite themselves, will bite other shit hard enough to actual remove their own teeth.

The same reason people appropriate any other foolish thing: they want to be validated and sound cool/right/attractive/intelligent/special. Of course, if someone considers autism as something worth appropriating for those reasons, they clearly missed the point.
