Congrats on your Mossberg, work on some tactical reloading drills with it, they're more useful and important at improving your skills than just sending scatter shot down range. Plus you can do them at home
 
What are the odds he:

-Knows nothing about ammunition, buys the cheapest Birdshot he can.

-Thinks shotguns work like videogames and you have to be close.

-Thinks shotguns work like videogames so he doesn't need to aim because in 3 yards it'll have a 2ft spread.

-Leaves it leaning against a wall somewhere stupid.

-Bonus: finds out you can modify guns and Aliexpress' the worst chinese shit onto it possible.

Anyway, doesnt really matter.
Everyone knows the only acceptable shotgun for home defence is an 1897 with a bayonet.

100% this. If Rich even takes it to the range once, that will be all the use he gets out of it. Calling it now. He's going to show up with his gun at his closest gun range, get told he'll have to call in and make a reservation, and he'll leave and never come back. The gun will sit at the back of his closet until he gets arrested for brandishing it at a family member in an argument.

Primarily because if he doesn't shoot guns at all and especially if he hasn't shot shotguns before (even trap shooting), a high-stress scenario like home defense might mean that he hesitates to rack the pump after each shot, since he doesn't have the muscle memory for that. Yes I understand pump actions are technically indestructible, but I would rather have a semi where I can just spam birdshot down a hallway rather than pump after every shot.

The choice of weapon is simultaneously baffling and understandable. Which makes me think he probably walked into a gun store and asked the boomer fudd behind the counter what he should get and the guy handed him the used mossberg he's been trying to sell for the last half a year.
A 12 gauge shotgun and cheap buck shot is what anyones going to walk out with if you go into a gun store asking about home defense (which has different considerations than just your plain ole typical self defense situation.) and have zero gun experience.
 
I'm no expert but I do own a couple of guns and there's one thing I've noticed and have confirmed with several friends is that right after buying a gun there is an immediate urge to get another. You start looking at different types and that little voice in the back of your head starts to justify it. Of course anyone with any impulse control just ignores that, but then there are those people that own shit tons of them.

Dickers is not a man known for his impulse control and I predict that within a year he'll be bragging about how many guns he owns.

I know this might be autistic, but I honestly think if you are truly afraid for your family's safety and your own, you would not advertise that you are an inexperienced gun owner. You just broadcasted to people that you have no idea how to handle the thing until "next week". And you put to rest any worries potential assailants may have had, as you confirmed that you weren't armed prior, and are barely armed now.

It's almost like he knows that nobody is going to actually attack him and he just wanted to buy a new toy.

tbh, I might be more worried to fuck with someone with no experience because yeah, they might not know how to fully use the thing but they also might not know basic safety precautions and treat it like a child treats a toy. Like don't trust these retards to do basic things like keep the safety on, exercise trigger-discipline or only point it at people they actually intend to shoot.
