“The front page of the internet” website Reddit has been sued by a woman who claims that “over the course of the last decade” the popular discussion website “has knowingly benefited financially from videos and images posted to its website(s) featuring victims who had not yet reached the age of majority.”

The Jane Doe behind the suit has accused the platform of not only repeatedly allowing an abusive ex-boyfriend to upload both photos and videos featuring her as a minor, but also of taking “virtually no action” to “address this horrifying and pervasive trend.”

IMMORAL CONTENT AND FINANCIAL BENEFITS

The immoral content, which has been taken without her knowledge or consent, contains sexual photos and videos of her as a 16-year-old and has been uploaded countless times on the website that in 2019 alone had at least 430 million active users.

The class-action suit alleges that starting from 2019 till the present time, the plaintiff’s now ex-boyfriend has distributed indecent photos and videos of her in no less than 36 different subreddits with Reddit moderators taking even “several days” before removing the content after she had initially alerted them.

“Because Reddit refused to help, it fell to Jane Doe to monitor no less than 36 subreddits — that she knows of — which Reddit allowed her ex-boyfriend to repeatedly use to repeatedly post child pornography,” the complaint reads. “Reddit’s refusal to act has meant that for the past several years Jane Doe has been forced to log on to Reddit and spend hours looking through some of its darkest and most disturbing subreddits so that she can locate the posts of her underage self and then fight with Reddit to have them removed.”

Even worse, despite repeated infractions, Reddit administrators limited themselves to only banning the user’s original account, thus allowing the man to create a new one and continue posting the stream of revenge porn “often to the exact same subreddit.”

THE CLASS-ACTION SUIT REPRESENTS ANYONE IN A SIMILAR SITUATION

Or someone who had similar content posted on Reddit – while under the age of 18 and applies controversial measures instituted in 2018 under the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act, a pair of laws known together as FOSTA-SESTA. The law amends a part of the 1996 Communications Decency Act called Section 230, which shields web publishers from being legally liable for what users post on their websites and instead makes the act of knowingly assisting, facilitating, or supporting sex trafficking illegal.

REDDIT: INFANTIL LEWD CONTENT HAS NO PLACE ON THE REDDIT PLATFORM

However, a Reddit spokesperson stated for Gizmodo that any and all content that involves child sexual abuse “has no place on the Reddit platform” and that they “actively maintain policies and procedures that don’t just follow the law, but go above and beyond it.”

A similar statement to The Verge also assures that Reddit deploys “both automated tools and human intelligence to proactively detect and prevent the dissemination of CSAM material. When we find such material, we purge it and permanently ban the user from accessing Reddit. We also take the steps required under law to report the relevant user(s) and preserve any necessary user data.”

Even so, section 230 will most likely protect Reddit from any civil liability if the court will ultimately decide that image sharing does not constitute trafficking.

I hope reddit shuts down all nsfw content, it would generate so much salt from coomers to degenerates to onlyfans whores posting promos on a handful of subreddits.
The "think pieces" that would generate would be amazing.

It's 50/50 on if they would do it too since they have an IPO to think of. On the one hand it killed tumblr, on the other investors aren't going to be pouring money into a company with a cp and revenge porn problem.

This could be the rallying cry for those groups that go around trying to shut down the pron based on cp or anything else they can find. They got porn hub to bend the knee, reddit should be easy.

Yeah... Reddit isn't going down because of this. They're going to bend over for this woman by giving a really pathetic apology, take it down, ban a few people, and it's probably going to go silent after that.
Sadly you're right, nothing short of an asteroid hitting Reddit HQ will stop the site, and even then that's highly unlikely to stop it.

Sorry, we don't carry r/bigchungus because it's too offensive. Could we interest you in child porn or rape porn?

I hate reddit so much. Literally all that's left is bugmen, pedophiles, and cumbrains.

Yeah, cool, but can we, you know, actually get that site shut down or actually held responsible and not the legal-bribing fuckery that these companies pull off to basically come out unscaved?
Its not just their fault but the people keep using it even with said knowledge, showing a severe lack of dignity and morals that arent dropped at the sight of inconvenience.

Or the conspiratards on r/conspiracy that try and fail to be /pol/, resulting in /pol/ becoming a suckier version of r/conspiracy in some retarded ouroboros.

Gone wild otherwise known as advertise your onlyfans.

Note that I'm not a cumbrain just repeating what I've been told. Apparently women have ruined some porn subs because they're too busy attention whoring to follow the rules and jannies are too busy not banning them.

Hilarious.

On the one hand, I can't help but feel like this is using the FOSTA-SESTA chink in 230 in a way that isn't legally wise. A platform should not be liable for immediately removing content, only immediately removing it once operators have knowledge of it, however that occurs.

Establishing "has knowledge of" is the kicker, because we do not want an internet where CP being on a platform for any period of time is justification to yeet the platform. The result is an internet where the most common deplatforming vector will be CP posting by utter degenerates. They'll fade back into their VPNs, and the platform will be left holding the bill which fucks over legitimate users.

Some telling quotes:

This sucks, but have you ever seen the size of an inbox with constant mail coming in? That shit gets out of hand quick, and especially with how much bitching and reporting goes on at reddit generally, I'd imagine reports are stacked up for some time. If you can prove my supposition wrong, great, but there exists a non-malicious non-illegal explanation based on what is presented, and that's a problem for your case.

Nigga what the fuck are reddit mods/admins SUPPOSED to do about this? Hire blackwater to kidnap this guy and install a brain chip which tells them whenever he's making a new reddit account? There is NO solution for this. The closest that isn't insane is the Null 9chan solution of a image hash table banning uploads of images with that hash for reported CP, but even that has weaknesses (such as altering the image uploaded to alter the hash). You can IP ban the account IP...and he'll hop on a VPN to get around it. If the solution is "every platform has to run a AI-matrix robot tapped into the FBI CP database to algorithmicly remove CP" that's not cheap and fuuuuuuuck that, nobody except big platforms can afford much less develop that shit.

On the other hand, fuck reddit, facebook, and twitter.

Twitter and Facebook especially have the 1984 matrix robit CP tech right the fuck now and they don't use it because the way pedos use their platform makes them money.
