I actually liked the Borderlands games but I think Borderlands 3 is about three or four years too late. I don’t think anyone gives a fuck about the series in 2019.
i feel this, i've been a huge fan for so many years. Now with all the bad stuff circulating around the 3rd, i'm not sure i care too deeply anymore. And it sucks cuz BL3 would be the last AAA game i've been looking forward to. : (

Randy compares criticism against a controversial, arguably anti-consumerist decision to domestic abuse.
Also, Steam has recently rolled out an anti-review bomb feature so it's inaccurate to say they have "no interest in correcting this misuse."

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm not a Valve corporation fanboy (I don't play enough video games to really qualify for that) but I do like the company in general. I think they were on the right side of the VR HMD issue which was a similar issue involving exclusives and closed platforms. When I used to care a lot about games the big thing was NVIDIA vs ATI. They were neck and neck for a while and I would purchase ATI equipment because I felt that the anti consumer practices that NVIDIA was engaging in were bad for the industry. We all know how that battle ended up; I haven't built a machine with an AMD/ATI card in over 10 years because those same anti consumer practices allowed NVIDIA to dominate the market and AMD/ATI can't compete any longer.

I am sorry to say that I think maybe Valve's desire to play fair on their steam platform, the platform that basically launched PC gaming into the mainstream, is going to do them in eventually. Its really sad and I don't really know if there is a solution for them that won't compromise their ethics.

So, There's some uproar that Troy Baker won't return as Rhys in BL3. On one hand, Troy said that it wasn't offered to him... but Bitchford is claiming Troy didn't come to them.

Seems like there might be a nugget of truth in there, as Randy suggests that Rhys has little to no speaking lines in the game.

"Fortunately, with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all. You’ll see for yourself when the game comes out and you may disagree with me on that or not."

Troy probably didn't want to fly out/whatever for a 1 hour recording session for a minor part in BL3.

This isn't actually the first time this has happened to Baker within the last year- when Tales of Vesperia got a remaster, Troy wasn't even asked if he'd like to come back and play Yuri for the new content, and instead they got... I think David Vincent to do the new dialogue, and it's very obvious that his replacement isn't trying to emulate Baker's voice.

For the record, Baker's stance was that he'd have happily made the time to come back to Vesperia, since it was one of his breakout roles back in 2007, and he's been very vocal about adoring the chance to play Rhys in Borderlands back in the day so I feel the problem is more with Gearbox than him.

If that's true, it begs the question - who did Baker piss off to get multiple devs to decide to screw him over like that?

He got big name. Baker is one of the most acclaimed voice actors working right now, and back in 2013 he was providing the main voice talent for nearly every GOTY that wasn't GTA 5 or Assassin's Creed 4. He's also since moved to New York so he'd have to fly back to Texas and stay there for a while if he wants to come back for a role, and Baker's rates are a lot bigger than they'd have been in, say, 2007.

I remember back in 2014 or 2015, he caused a big twitter chimpout after making a Kaitlyn Jenner joke. The blowback was severe enough that he deleted his twitter for a while, but this was before Jenner got un-personed for being a Trump supporter.

What's so bad about the Epic Store?
This is something that was floating around a while ago:

725112

Other than the previous security concerns regarding their (very heavily-invested) Chinese partner, they've had numerous security breaches.

Another reason why people rightly don't want too many launchers is that other than their social circles being split, once you start getting 6+ launchers opening on startup they will have a noticeable slowing effect on some systems, especially as programs open all the time can cause memory leaks. The complaints are going to get worse as more stores emerge until some third party solution emerges that unifies your library into one list and it launches whatever relevant store you need when you install/open the game, and closes the store when you close the game. This will drive social circles further into Discord and away from the storefronts, so owners may resist it.

I think @Secret Asshole put it perfectly in this post and many others in the same thread:

I'm sorry, but I don't get 50 email messages trying to phish my Steam account from me like I do with Epic. lol, you're high. Steam is insanely secure. They bought 48% of Epic's outstanding shares and own 40% of its capital and stock options. It has 2 Tencent execs on the board of directors. 3 Tencent directors and 2 observers who Epic got to appoint from Tencent. Oh yeah, Tencent doesn't control anything in Epic. It has absolutely no influence over it, aside from the executives, the observers, the directors and controlling 48% of its shares. You're a fucking idiot if you think Epic doesn't have to answer to its 48% stockholder and its not going to have any influence on the company or store. Tencent can dump that stock and burn Epic to the ground if it wanted.

And not many of them are. I buy on sale and in bundles. Apparently you don't know of these things calls 'sales' and 'bundles' where things are heavily discounted.

This. It's not competing with Steam. At all. Its an anti-consumer shithole with massive Chinese influence, favoring publishers by not having forums. You know what you do if you have a problem with a game on the Epic games store? You go to Steam.

Also you can generate Steam keys for free, sell the game on your website and give out Steam keys to users and keep 100% of the profit. You don't need to have your game on Steam. But you know, you lose out on the features Steam has. It must be all those terrible features everyone hates which is why nobody sells their game with Steam keys that can be done for free on their website and make 100% of the profit.

However, if he could give a full explanation in a single post, I think that'd be preferable.

Also the store is way behind Steam in terms of features and it can't use payment methods like paypal

They very recently added a search function and an offline mode, to let you know where the store is in terms of features.

No bundles, no gifting, no paypal, no searching by genre (you can search for "Spooky's House of Jumpscares" but not "Horror Games") or tags, no mod support, no workshops, no automatic refunds, no wishlists, no cloud saves, and so on.

It's really really bare-bones and it seems pretty clear that they're putting more effort into the chinese malware side of the software than the actual "usable product" side of it. The launcher (despite only having like a few games) can't even detect if you have a game in your library before trying to sell you add ons (so you can buy addons/DLC for games you don't own).

They also make a really huge deal out of "we take less of a cut than steam, it's better for developers and consumers!" - when in practice all games launch at the same price on all platforms, so you (as a consumer) aren't seeing any benefit. Developers are typically paid a salary and aren't bonused so the people who are actually keeping all the extra money from the EGS are the owners/execs and/or the publishing company. Additionally, just because they offer a lower "take" now, that doesn't mean that they always will.

The store isn't just behind steam in terms of features, it's behind basically every store and launcher in existence. It's not better than GoG, UPLAY, ORIGIN, or even the Nexon Launcher. Those stores have some exclusive titles, also, but those are first party exclusives (Uplay is Ubisoft, so they have all the Assassin Creed games, Origin is EA so they have Madden, Fifa, whatever, and so on) which people don't love, but it makes sense for them to try and keep that profit margin. Epic Games is buying timed exclusives for games they don't manufacture or publish, many of those games previously being advertised on Steam as being for Steam, which is another pain point.

That said, with the piles of cash Epic is throwing around, it's a no-brainier for Randy Pitchford (and company) to take their offer. Randy in particular has been getting ready for this over the last few months on twitter and he is not at all above stealing cash (Secret bonuses and stealing huge cash from Sega) so this is easy for him. It reduces a lot of sales risk for BL3. It's crazy however, for Randy Pitchford, to think that anyone is fooled by him. He is shilling for EGS because they paid him a ton of fucking money and he's out there trying to act like "Sure they paid my company a giant pile of cash and then (allegedly) threw me a pile of cash under the table; but even if they didn't it's still a good product!" and getting mad when people are telling him to eat shit.
