bumblebees are great because unlike bees and wasps they never attack me
also the bees build nests in my fruit trees and the wasps once made a nest in the shed where i keep my gardening tools. very annoying! but the bumblebees seem to make no nests at all, i saw them crawl into little earth holes once so i guess they live underground like ants?

Yes, many species of bees and wasps live in underground nests. Unfortunately, that means that accidentally stepping on a wasp nest is a thing. They don't appreciate that. Ow.
