Plebicites historically don't serve to make decisions but rather to start the gears in motion and solidify legitimacy of a decision already made. It's particularly sly of him to do in an age where "democracy" has basically been deified, by those who stand opposed to him no less, who can't say a thing without self-afflicting an injury as their entire gambit relies on belief in the fictions of popular sovereignty, at least until they destroy other cultures to the point where everyone but themselves are too atomized to offer resistance.

Or it's as simple as a preemptive validation so that the first word on a decision is a show of support so that he can run ahead of whatever screeching journalists would throw at each and every change otherwise. Don't overthink it.

Obviously these represent changes he already wants to make. Like so obviously that it's a real shortbus move to announce that revelation. He's not going to put up a poll asking whether he should saw his nuts off.
However I don't doubt that he'd at least change tact if a poll failed, because the legitimacy of this strategy relies on it. But that probably isn't a risk simply because the questions are likely data-driven in the first place, so they know what the result will be without needing to force a thing.

I failed to screenshot one tweet, but this guy--a washed out German professor born in rural Wisconsin-- wrote how fascism is "the new gos is dead" and fascism is coming back. Here is what I did take a screenshot of, which was also deleted. What messed me up is the "who to follow" intermission that no one asked for. Somebody should start a catch all for lefty twitter copes, talk of leaving etc...

Not utterly surprised "destroy fascism" people never take the time to learn history because fascism was a new wave reaction to the weimar german republic that the people voted into power because of how big of a shithole Germany was after WWI. Continue down this path and people will get angry and they will react.
