I know I sperg about it from time to time but the lack of irony in the game Marvel's Midnight Suns is one of the things I really, really enjoyed about the game. It's not without humour. In fact it's one of those rare games where the jokes are actually funny. (Except for Cap's grandpa humour but that's deliberate). But the characters actually take themselves and the story seriously. To the extent that even Deadpool (one of the DLCs) is one of the more of an emotive takes on the character, for all that he still goes for the laughs. If you actually get to know him in the game and build up your trust you get more of a 'jokes to hide the pain' vibe from him which goes a long way to balancing the crassness.

Case in point because people were talking about Venom, there's none of that "we... WE.... we are, I thought you were going to say it, okay no: We are...." dialogue from the trailer for the movie version. The humour is more in his interactions with Spiderman as you can actually get them working together in the game. Eddie turns out to be on the more Conspiracy Theorist side of things with his journalism which Peter keeps trying to reign in (unsuccessfully).

Game has around 65,000 lines of dialogue, I'd say about <1% of it is quips. I wish modern shows and comics showed the love for making character's meaningfully distinct and authentic that the games writers did. They're clearly massive fans of Marvel and not just MCU stuff, either.

I pity the poor motherfucker that has to follow Wesley Snipes in the role.
I tried to play it but couldn't get into it, the cover art made it look very dark and edgy but the opening didn't impress me, and once I've seen that you have a big NPC mansion, very LGBT "punk heroes" I didn't give shit about, and bonding points (so god forbid I'd have fun being an asshole to characters) I lost interest. It probably gets better later.

I thought everyone already knew that. Was it meant to be a secret?

Only for the intended audience. middle age women MCU fans with zero knowledge on the comics. Everyone else that still cares about the MCU saw the leaks. Those funkos spoiled everything in advance anyway. Audrey Plaza seems to be playing
death
if anyone cares. Edit:I don't know how to blur text sorry for the unnesesary box thing

Well it is dark, because it's a world-ending event and bad things happen, but it's not edgy because the characters are heroic and not anti-heroes. (Wolverine isn't afraid to claw-stab people, mind). I mean, I guess Venom is as he canonically eats people in the game but it's not really focused on for edge points. You can choose the outfits for your characters so if you want some spiky 90's look to Ghost Rider or something you can pick it but I'd definitely say dark rather than edgy. The characters are for the most part unashamed of being heroes.

For the friendship points, they relate a bit to whether your hunter goes dark or light (or balanced). Some characters will respond differently depending on what you do. Like if you're very "My way or the highway" and "mercy is for the weak" in your answers, then Cap will give you negative friendship points whilst Wolverine or Illyana (Magik) will respect you for it and gain points. Same as if you're an asshole Stephen Strange takes it personally whilst Illyana just thinks your badass and her Friendship points will go up. I like how they handled Dark and Light paths in the game because it's not about sidiing with evil or not but about your attitude to command and other people's feelings. There are mechanical rewards for reaching particular levels of Dark or Light, but it also makes it more difficult to have good friendship with everyone.

There's no LGBT content that I can think of. The only romances in the game are heterosexual and I don't think there are any gay characters. Though you can freak Nico out at one point by pretending to be lesbian. The "they" singular pronoun is used for your character but I think that's largely because recording alternate versions of tens of thousands of lines for both male and female PC would be a royal PITA.

EDIT: Oh wait, yes there is - Agatha and Caretaker are pretty heavily implied to be lovers (though never stated) so yes, there is a lesbian relationship in the game after all. My mistake. It's not exactly heavy DEI propaganda though, unless you think any inclusion of female-female relationship must be.

I will say that the game has to be played on the hardest difficulties to get the most out of it. It's like Alien: Isolation in that if you play it on Normal or lower you're cheating yourself of being forced to learn all the subtle details. No kidding on Ultimate III I had two pages of notes for the final battle trying to beat it. I several times got to points in that game where I thought "I cannot beat this" only to come back to it the next day more determined and taking another look at how to play certain characters. Ghost Rider in particular went from a character I just couldn't make use of to one of my favourite damage dealers after one of these crunch points where I was forced to really learn how to best use his abilities.

Anyway, I know all this seems a little off-topic but there's so much dialogue and story interaction in this game that you get more Marvel character story in this game than you do in a dozen comics or most MCU movies. It also leans much more towards comics versions than the movies which I appreciate. Heck, Carol Danvers is actually fun in this one. Blade is clearly Wesley Snipe's influenced mind, but who isn't fine with that?

Plaza is perfect casting.

The biggest problem is that they keep trying to tie everything back into the MCU, which has become a bloated shambling monstrosity that prevents anything actually creative from being made.
I get why fans want this, but it's been terribly managed. I don't mind we know Blade is part of the MCU, but he doesn't need to be an active participant. Just like we know Blade is part of 616, but he just shares adventures occasionally. We csn have a Blade movie and just a brief cameo of him in the main MCU movies.

"Blade's in Panama now, he sent us this video of this weird thing he filmed while fighting this big vampire." There. You acknowledge he exists in universe, he communicates with the main team, and they all cooperate.

Where has Blade been all this time? If Blade has always been around but offscreen, that must mean vampires have also always been a thing; where were they?
You can always explain that Blade kept them all at bay and controlled until he couldn't and vampire activity is now out of control, so we are finding out about it. That's not hard. Even in universe, in Blade movie, most people aren't aware vampires exist.

What is hard is to explain the x-men. Blade is one dude, how you explain the millions of mutants that were a thing since the times of ancient Egypt? You can always say that Wanda or any other powerful sorcerer said the No More Mutant words or somehow made us all forget about them, but it's such an asspull that's not gonna work.

There's only gonna be one Blade
Whatever little chance remained, Sniper gave the final blown to kill it with those words. At this rate, we're gonna have first a final Snipe Blade movie.

I still say the best way to handle introducing the X-Men into the MCU was to put it in as part of the unsnapping accidentally somethingsomething dimensions something now there's Fox movies content

There are a lot of creative ways to do it, but to be fair, it's not like Marvel are now at their more creative moment.

Honestly, I think it's too late to introduce them. Also, the X-Men aren't just five people, it's a big team in another already bloated cast of characters. You can't focus on giving them all some time.

even Marvel Comics has had plenty of trouble keeping Mutants and The Rest Of The Marvel Universe on the same page (no pun intended) over the years, rather than basically two separate universes that crossover as editorial says

but yeah I get that "uhh... multiverses" is where they're headed but it feels like there should have been a more elegant way to do it

Thank you, friend.

As for Plaza's rumored character Death, it makes a lot of sense. She is a very important character for cosmic marvel , and infact she was a major character in the original infinity war. But popularity wise, only comic fans care about her so having her debut in Disney+ makes sense. Not a bad choice all things considered. She could even be a huge it if they play their cards right.

Meanwhile MCU fans are coping hard saying that just because it's mediocre doesn't mean it's bad. The idea that they can't watch literally anything else instead of watching an, average at best, show, just doesn't cross their minds.

Lol 100% fits with modern Marvel to use a character literally a decade too late

To be fair I'm sure Whedon was planed to user her until they got rid of him, and then the Russos decided to give Thanos a more understandable motivation. But, yes. She was supposed to be a major character 10 years ago instead of being awardly inserted in a C-list spin off show.

if anyone cares.
as long as this leads to her and Ryan Reynolds doing some stupid video together as "not" their marvel characters i'm ok with it. but it probably won't. Like as a white dude how i would approach it is release some video on april fools day about a love triangle between her, Ryan Reynolds, and Josh Brolin. And its all happening on whatever bullshit green screen lot they shoot all this shit on and they can do some "playing the heros but also themselves" style cameos from any actors they can who end up involved in picking sides. Also despite knowing comic books all my life it took me until hilariously recently to realize MCU and DC death were seperate characters and Lady Death in the MCU is not good looking whatsoever.

it really was for the best, it was one of the many points where "it works in comics but not in real life" there's a reason "thanos did nothing wrong" became a huge meme in the late 2010s and will be the thing of gen alpha message boards when they discover this "hidden gem" in the 2030s.

She was good looking in the Deadpool videogame where she was wearing a skimpy outfit and "Day of the Dead" make-up. Also, DC should have gotten Jenna Ortega for their version of Death. Wait until she was done with Wednesday and snatch her up.

The discussion got me to give Agatha a try. Made it through the first episode and then about ten minutes into the second and have stopped. I like the actress and the character, didn't like the gay kid. And as he seemed like he'd be a main character I stopped there and saved my time.

I dropped it in the second episode too. Not even Patti LuPone could get me to keep watching which is a shame.

Is she a witch on this? Because when she was cast for AHS Coven, people expected her to be a witch and instead was the fundie neighbor and l was made to sing. Honestly, I think she was just cast to sing because AHS is made by Ryan Murphy.
