A male professor who made a joke in a crowded elevator at an academic conference is now facing disciplinary charges after a female professor who was there filed a formal complaint.

Richard Ned Lebow, professor of international political theory at King’s College in London, was in a jammed elevator when someone asked him what floor he needed to get off on, according to a Washington Post opinion piece.

“Ladies’ lingerie,” he joked.

He was attending the International Studies Association conference in San Francisco at the time. Simona Sharoni, professor or women’s and gender studies at Merrimack College in Massachusetts, also present in the elevator, took offense and several hours after the incident, she filed a complaint with the association, which found that Lebow violated the group’s code of conduct.

After Lebow was made aware of the complaint, he sent Sharoni an email telling her “I certainly had no desire to insult women or to make you feel uncomfortable.” He also suggested she may have “interpreted my remark out of context.”

“Like you, I am strongly opposed to the exploitation, coercion or humiliation of women,” Lebow wrote, according to the Post. “As such evils continue, it seems to me to make sense to direct our attention to real offenses, not those that are imagined or marginal. By making a complaint to ISA that I consider frivolous — and I expect, will be judged this way by the ethics committee — you may be directing time and effort away from the real offenses that trouble us both.”

The ISA committee found fault with Lebow characterizing Sharoni’s complaint as “frivolous.” It instructed him to issue an “unequivocal apology,” which he refused to do.

Lebow told colleagues this is “a horrifying and chilling example of political correctness” that “encourages others to censor their remarks for fear of retribution.”

"For decades, women and other marginalized groups in the academy had to put up with white men who decided what counts as a violation and what is ‘frivolous,’" Sharoni told The Chronicle. "As someone who has dedicated her life to confronting sexism (and other forms of discrimination and oppression) in academic spaces, I cannot and will not remain silent when misogyny is at play."

Lebow faces appropriate sanctions from ISA if he doesn’t write an apology by May 15.

ISA did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The Liberal Jews™ strike again! Did she not think that for one moment maybe he was trying to promote transvestism?! This is an absolute oppression on a fellow Liberal Jew™ and I will NOT tolerate his marginalization!

Also fuck anyone who studies "Gender Studies".

Can someone explain to me why his joke is offensive to women?

To me it sounded like he was making fun of himself.

"REEEEE! He mentioned womens clothing! REEEE!"

Seriously, the joke was not even about women, it was about elevators.
This bitch is ticker and more easily agitated than fucking Rosechu

It isn't. But is offensive to hags who have to find issue with everything to justify their beliefs and the fact they are teaching a useless degree that will cost a bunch of kids 1000s in debt.

I'll have to remember her strategy next time I hear a group of women joking about men's dicks or whatever. Surely punishing them for their humor is the path to a society free of tribalized animosity.

Yeah that woman isn't exactly covering up the "humorless old witch" vibes, the guy should've read the room better.

I suppose that is something to think about if you're ever in that position.

So I did some digging... I've found some of her brilliant writing...

Essentially we have 14 pages of buzzwords about "women's political struggles in Northern Ireland and Palestine. (I'm no international scholar, but I think there's a bit of a difference between Palestine and Northern Ireland

I would slightly disagree with you. I've personal experience from my countrys(which is not in the anglophone world) university system, and I would say that while there is a strong SJW element present, it' erroneous to say that whole academic establishment would be overrun by this new wave of communism. It's mainly the faculties of Humanities that are the main bastions of this kind of shit, with other faculties mostly doing their own thing and not caring that much about politics in general. Now, humanistic sciences are really on their death-throes, and partially(but only partially, there are other reasons for this shit also) this current climate is the end result of their desperate attempt to remain relevant in a world that increasingly doesn't give a shit about humanistic sciences - even other scientists mostly think that they're a joke. Other scientists however tolerate this shit as long as it doesn't hit their fan too much, but with every incident like this, the scientific world in itself starts to become more conscious of the problem in their midst.

I speak from experience from the USA in a private institution, it is in the humanities mainly. Once you drift into STEM, you don't find it. The problem is that the post-modern social sciences rely on dead theories like tabula rasa and do not take into account, modern evolutionary psychiatry, genetics, twin studies, psychiatric studies on human behavior and the like.

Humanistic sciences are in their death throws for several reasons in the US:

1) They only function based on a pyramid scheme as they do not produce candidates for real jobs that make decent money. It basically requires you to go from Bachelors > Masters > PhD if you want any chance at a decent job. The problem is, with the increasing number of candidates, the bar is set lower. So you have studies not being reproducible and basically functioning on the basis of opinion. With student loans, this basically equates to universities getting free money for very little investment. If accountability on job outcome were measured, these fields would die extremely, extremely, quickly.

2) They are in a massive reproducibility crisis, even more so than cancer research and research with contaminated cell lines. The reproducibility of their studies is estimated to be below 50% with the worst analytics pegging them at being 25% reproducible. And those are ones that are based on somewhat sound theories.

3) They do no incorporate modern behavioral models based on psychiatric, genetic and behavioral studies, making their conclusions beyond useless.

4) Their entire discipline basically amounts to made up shit. Give me any topic within any gender/cultural studies field and I'll be able to churn out a bullshit paper. The only bar preventing them from getting flooded with fake papers is them actually checking if you have a degree in the field. Anyone trained academically above the undergraduate level can produce a gender studies paper that is publishable with ease.

5) The scientific world has always combated this problem. See the 'science wars', where post-modernism tried to invade the hard sciences and basically undermine evidence based research. The reason why the social science fail to infiltrate STEM is because STEM largely relies on evidence, theories and facts to prove observations. In social sciences, your observations are proof. In hard science, you have to prove your observations.

6) They are ideologically stagnant, most of the basis of their research has not evolved since the 1960s and 1970s. Basically all their conclusions are the same, everything is sexist and racist, and they're running out of things to call sexist and racist and have long since pushed what actual reality is.

The professor should have added, "but not that woman's lingerie!"

Why is gender studies even a thing?!

Because for some people a Communication's Major was too difficult. In these social science fields, all you have to do is parrot your professor's opinion and you get your A. That's why they can't argue or debate their points. They have no idea how.

Don't forget that the graduates of these utterly worthless non-STEM field programs don't get jobs, they don't pay back their debts, and even with government funding, student loan defaults are through the roof.

This is also yet another reason anyone with any merit should get the fuck out of academia and move into profitable activities. You will rapidly see academia diminish in importance and they will have to reform their ways to keep people with actual merit.
