The Louvre Museum in Paris has been closed following a robbery, France's culture minister says.

Rachida Dati wrote on X that the robbery happened on Sunday morning as the museum was opening. She said she was at the site, where police are investigating

The museum confirmed it was closing for the day "for exceptional reasons," without providing further details.

French media reports say jewellery has been stolen, after three masked men reportedly used a freight lift under renovation to access the Apollo Gallery, where what remains of France's crown jewels are kept. The gallery is on the side of the River Seine.
The thieves are said to have broken windows to gain entry before escaping on motor scooters. They also had chainsaws. The value of the stolen items is not yet known.

The Louvre is the world's most visited museum and houses many of the world's most famous artworks and treasures.

Earlier, we reported comments from Culture Minister Rachida Dati who said one stolen item had been found near the Louvre as the thieves made their getaway.

Several French media outlets are reporting that the item is a 19th Century crown belonging to Empress Eugenie and has been found broken.

Eugenie was the wife of Napoleon III, who ruled France in that era.

According to Louvre's website, the crown features golden eagles and is covered in 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds.

Is there, realistically, a "market" for this?
If you were after the material value wouldn't it be easier to hit jewellery stores? Or is this some moustache twirling villan art collector putting out a "hit" to impress his equally moustache twirling villan friends with the newest addition to his stolen art collection?

The fact it got stolen at all is crazy, in America if you tried to steal from like the Smithsonian or something, you’d end up shot before you made it very far.

Apparently, the jewels are most likely going to have the gems cut out and the metals melted down for reselling. This also makes the thieves harder to track down. Imagine how humiliating it is for the French to have their centuries-old historical treasures being melted down and resold by turd worlders they themselves imported into their own country.
