Good children's content should be engaging enough that an adult would also want to sit down & watch with their kids (assuming they're parents who care) When Lauren Faust was hired to work on My Little Pony she was already someone that's worked on beloved children's shows & movies & drew elements of the show she wanted from the show she watched as a kid. It wasn't meant to be slop you put on a tv & tune out. The fact a bunch of mid 20's to mid 30 y/o men started watching it is both creepy but shows that the show was genuinely good content & even parents at the time loved it, despite the bronies that came from it.
