NHK’s 6.55 p.m. (0955 GMT) alert on its web site said: “North Korea appears to have launched a missile...The government urges people to take shelter inside buildings or underground.”The same alert was sent to mobile phone users of NHK’s online news distribution service.
In five minutes, the broadcaster put out another message on the website correcting itself and said no government warning, called “J-alert”, had been issued.

“This happened because equipment to send a news flash onto the Internet had been incorrectly operated. We are deeply sorry,” an NHK announcer said on its 9:00 p.m. news program, bowing deeply in apology.

I was joking with a friend how there'd be another nuke false alarm but I didn't actually expect it to happen. At least this time the hysteria only took five minutes.

Yeah that's weird. But they really need to fix their alert equipment. Because if it keeps crying wolf people won't take a real emergency seriously fast enough.

This is only going to add fuel to the fire of the conspiracy theorists who are claiming that there actually was a missile heading toward Hawaii and that it was only declared to be a false alarm after the threat was neutralized by US government forces.

The first optimistic conspiracy theory I've ever read. Usually they're are all about Illuminati, New World Order or the Armageddon.

This is North Korea's plan. Cause mass spread chaos and have opposing countries implode from the inside out. This is the "play on easy in Civilization" tactic.
 
After Hawaii and now this it makes me wonder if these are preparedness drills of some sort, or just a coincidence. Both stories appeared civilian-level only, without any real involvement (false information or otherwise) from the military.

Testing of military response time was very common during the cold war.
 
inb4 this turns out to be the work of NK, forcing their enemies to get nuclear alert systems under maintenance before the real strike
 
Best Korea would need a lot more balls than they have now to truly nuke Anime Land - and that's implying they had the balls to truly do it in the first place, sadly. Come on, now - Is there no one out there that can truly end the mistake that is anime?

Seriously, though - we (America), Japan, and anywhere else where this becomes an issue: We really do need to update our ICBM alert / defense systems for just such occasions. This shit is NOT something to take lying down. EVER. We need to be prepared for the worst when it comes to this kind of thing, especially knowing how destructive and next to impossible to avoid / prevent once it's truly in motion these things are.
