They know they can't get women so they do what they consider to be the next best thing; try and become the woman they always wanted. This doesn't really make the pain of being an unattractive loser any easier to deal with though so while many of them claim to be gay or whatever made up tumblr gender they pulled out of their ass, most are still hetero guys. And because their transona didn't magically change them into what they wanted or get them pussy they wind up preying on those that are emotionally vulnerable or minors.
