Experts recommend that you should immerse yourself in the language completely to ensure most effective learning. Personally, I recommend joining the volunteer squad of the Special Military Operation. They'll teach you the Russian language and culture like you've never been taught before.
To be fair, recruits of the foreign legion learn French pretty quick. They just keep barking orders at you in French and you have to respond in French. You have to try your best and absorb as much as possible and use it, and think of ways to say things if you dont know the words. It is really effective and there is no way to try and "escape" learning it.

I just love the way it sounds when spoken or sung- even when the most slavic ass trash niggas speak it, it's weirdly beautiful? Maybe I'm delusional. Consider it love of the language.
I think russian is pretty, although it is quite complex grammatically and quite far removed from Germanic languages. I'm just asking since actually using the language for the thing you like is what keeps you going. Maybe the optimal strategy is grinding flash cards, reading childrens books and specifically design texts and listening exercises that reuse the same set of words over and over to develop a core as quickly as possible. But if you don't care for it at all, you won't learn. The news articles really helped me, it helped me understand a ton of grammar no amount of grammar book reading could do for me. After the first 5 articles i started to recognize a lot of the structure and felt confident when I could translate bits and pieces and could even read a sentence, recognizing every word and every grammar bit. And I like reading the news, so if a headline piqued my interest, I would feel motivated to translate it.
So if you want to learn it for your girlfriend, then I would suggest learning simple daily phrases you can use in your daily communication. If you like the music, I would try to translate some of your favorite songs and listen to them over and over. Until at some point you know every line and what the line translates as. Even the weird little grammar constructs English would never use but are common in Russian.

The Anki 2k core is really useful since like 80% of a text are common words. Even at 500 you already know some of the extremely common words that cover 50% of a random text. This also works well with news since you then also learn 1 or 2 specific words that are uncommon and suddenly you can read the text. Although it is probably not the best strategy, early on I didnt actually put in that much time, just the anki grind and a few lines here and there. It is hard to do anything if you know so little. Textbooks try to make you do little exercises like introducing yourself or asking for the time, but I didnt really care for that. Just doing your anki and waiting for your basic vocab to take root is all you can really do.

Playing the game? put Russian subtitles or VO on
This can work, but you cant just put the russian VO on if you have english subs, or have russian subs with english VO. your brain tries to find the most convenient way to get past an obstacle. If there is some form of english, your brain will just use that and tune out the russian. Same with reading while using a text translator. You have to FIRST read the text and translate it yourself, then read the translation, if you read the text, think "huh, I think i kinda got it" then immediately read the translation, you wont learn.
