it says a lot about her, if im not mistaken she's basically the reason they can't induct Owen into the HoF (but AEW having a tournament in his namesake is apparently ok)
To add onto the post I made to Trolli, Stu/Helen got a couple million, $10M went to establishing the Owen Hart Foundation (which has done a lot of great charitable work in/around Calgary) and a chunk of the settlement money went to ensuring her kids would be taken care of.
The reason the payout was 'lower' was because Ellie fucked over legal proceedings by sending WWE a bunch of legal documents that basically gave them leverage so Martha had to settle.
She's always been against WWE making any sort of profit off of Owen and has gone to the courts in the past over that. I don't necessarily blame her, and the shit with AEW seems more like a reluctant bone to throw to the fans who want to 'honor' his legacy.
I don't think characterizing her as a golddigger or whatever is really fair or accurate to her.
EDIT: And I will say that she's shown far more integrity over all of this shit than Bret, and I am saying this as someone who is a huge Bret fan.
Not sure if Stu and Helen were still on good terms with Martha later on but Bret and Martha did have a rift eventually since like you said, the rest of the Harts were busy tripping over themselves to try to get in good terms with WWE.
As far as I know she was on good terms with the elder Harts until their passing. Things did sour between Martha and Bret eventually because Bret was all 'muh legacy', which, honestly, I think was
mostly bullshit and
mostly rationalizing him chasing a payday (his relationship with Vince is really fucking complicated as he was kinda a father figure that he didn't really have with Empty Headed Stu. But also, the whole whinging about his legacy is kinda stupid because everyone
knows Bret's contributions and a single DVD smear piece wouldn't have changed that.)
I say that because Bret is still trying to make money -- there's a restaurant that opened up in a casino that is basically a museum of his career. All of his belts are on display, plus some of his gear and other things.
