The problem with this, is this isn’t necessarily the story they want to tell though. You see this multiple times with Dragon Age-they want to write about female mage elf lesbians. The really funny part is that these developers still don't get it.
I wonder how many more studio closures and layoffs it's going to take before they, collectively, wise up and realize the chuds are the audience, that they want to play as the White, heterosexual male paladin that gets to genocide the orcs and bangs the snarky, big titty goth GF and ride off into the sunset?
Then again, they probably know all this - we've seen plenty of statistical evidence collected by the devs themselves attesting to this fact - yet they are all such fanatical Marxists they can't physically force themselves to make such a game, and will viciously lash out at any of their fellow oven-dodgers that suggest doing the sane thing.
Appeals to emotion and pleading for mercy are done from a position of weakness, and are utterly ineffective when aimed at an audience that has largely grown apathetic towards their product and knows the only entertainment they can eke out of it is watching the devs fail.
Apathy is the precursor to spite, if they're not going to make fun games for me, they can entertain me with their suffering. At the end of the day I can refuse to buy harder than they can try to shame me.
And to be honest I get it-the stock story you’re describing has been done ten thousand times, and sooner or later you want to write other things.
That being the case-BioWare should be willing to admit this “we the writers and devs want quirky lesbians, the bulk of the audience wants a standard male power fantasy-if we aren’t going to give the audience what they want, we’ll just accept being out of work”.
That would at least be an honest admission that there is an unbridgeable gap between what the audience wants and what they want.
If you don’t want the chuds as an audience then you should stick to writing novels or Tumblr one shots.
