In a case that has horrified SPCA enforcement officials, Anderson Joe and Melissa Tooshley of Duncan have been charged with animal cruelty after a dog seized from their care died from severe neglect.

:horrifying: :horrifying: :horrifying:
BC SPCA special constables seized the emaciated, chained dog in critical distress on Feb. 16.

“This is one of the most profoundly shocking and disturbing cases of abuse we have ever witnessed,” said Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA. “We received a report of a dog in distress and when the constables arrived at the property they found a medium-sized brown dog on a tether that was only a few inches long, standing in a large pile of mud and feces.”

“As they got closer there was an overpowering stench and they realized that, not only was the dog severely emaciated, but his collar was deeply embedded into his neck, causing massive infection,” she said. :horrifying: :horrifying: :horrifying:

Moriarty adds that the dog’s head was swollen to two to three times its normal size.

“The constables used bolt cutters to free the dog and immediately rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic,” says Moriarty. “The wound from the embedded collar exposed the dog’s trachea and jugular vein — it was horrific.”

Despite extensive emergency treatment and around-the-clock care, the dog succumbed to his critical condition two days later, the SPCA reported.

“This kind of appalling neglect and cruelty is sickening and absolutely unacceptable in our society,” says Moriarty.

If convicted, Joe and Tooshley face a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine and up to a lifetime ban on owning animals.

This happened on Cowichan Reserve land. While packs of roaming stray dogs have been a serious problem on Reserve for quite a while, I'd have to say this is the worst "solution" to the problem I have ever seen.

Pretty much, though Westholme is closer to Crofton or Chemainus than the Tzhouhalem or Allenby road areas of Duncan.

I'm going to go out on a limb and theorize BUT MUH RESIDENTSHUL SCHOOL ABUSE CHAIN is going to be brought up at some point. And, no joke, the justice system of Canada has to take into account things like that in sentencing. There is quite a bit of child abuse in the area too; many First Nations children are in foster care because of this. Mostly a result of parental alcoholism due to either the parents having been abused themselves because the grandparents or great-grandparents were abused in residential schools and they crawled into a bottle to deal with the trauma, and it spread out from there, or the parents were trying to vision quest on vermouth and it got out of hand.

Stray dogs on Reserve pose a particularly thorny problem because the regular animal control people don't have jurisdiction and can't just go on reserve catching stray dogs. Either Cowichan Tribes has to physically deal with it, or nothing gets done. This is particularly since many farms with livestock are adjacent to the Reserve and there's little to no recourse other than literally shooting the offending dogs in the act.

I have never heard anything good about a reserve. Just a lot of articles about poverty, contaminated water, abuse and alcoholism. But I think that giving someone a break because of their bad upbringing isn't really beneficial. Especially if they just go right back to the same behavior again. But in the current year there's even more pressure to let POCs off the hook or treat them too gently.

Part of why things like this happen is we don't view animals as even having rights, despite them being able to experience pain and suffering as much as humans do. We have much the same nervous system. We just have the brainpower also to understand the difference between good and evil. And then to disregard it and be evil anyway.

This is such vile behavior that you could be convicted of it even if you did it to animals we were going to eat.

If animals have no rights, why do cases like this inspire universal horror? If animals were just machines reacting mechanically, who would care if they were harmed? After all, they couldn't suffer if that were true. I think the universal horror cases like this inspire derive from the fact that you realize this was a suffering creature who was treated in an abhorrent manner by awful people, and that the animal's rights were violated, and someone should be punished.

FUCKIN' WHITEY COMING OVER HERE AND MAKING US ALCOHOLICS AND DRUG ADDICTS

They did draw a pretty bad genetic hand in not being exposed to alcoholic beverages (mostly), much less distilled ones, for much of their history, therefore never getting much of a resistance to it, then getting invaded by Euros who not only had all kinds of diseases they'd never been exposed to but also shit-tons of distilled alcohol.

It really depends
Our teachings tell us all animals are sacred and connected to the mother Earth, most are revered and life is precious for most everything.
Hell, when we hunt we still pray for forgiveness, thanks, and a good journey for the body's spirit

That having been said, its different culture by culture, I don't live near Duncan, have no idea if the elders are still active, etc. etc. etc.
But most of the Rez's are shit places, health problems, education problems, a lot of drug and alcohol abuse, along with human and animal abuse to go alongside that.
Still, fuck those niggers

There are still elders active, and there's a few travelling shamans, but not all natives here are into their traditional beliefs. Plus when one's drinking 24/7 and spending all money on booze, neglect is going to happen, whether to animals or children. They probably got so blitzed that half the time they forgot they had a dog.

I remember being in middle school and hearing announcements about "Youth Allowance Cheques can be picked up in room 201" (which was an Indigenous Homeroom) and I knew nothing about those things but was informed that basically they pay First Nations kids to go to school. And even then the dropout rate for First Nations was atrocious (and still kinda is).

I knew at least one native kid in school (with a Polish-sounding last name) personally that became a marine biologist, tho. He didn't really like me (prolly cuz of my :autism: that nobody knew what it was) but I was in some of his classes so I knew him.

I met a dude who was from a reserve in Ontario, he was super chill and he talked about some of the issues going on in the reserve where kids just drank and did drugs all day and he had to grow up in foster care.

It's really terrible what's become of Canada's first nations tribes what with the high rate of young native girls going missing, the lack of access to clean water and stanky Rez cigarettes

They're legislated ghettos. There's really no other logical outcome, there's no other economic drivers besides drugs, cheap cigs and gas, and prostitution. White people would never have accepted that shit if the same deal was handed to them, and they sure as fuck wouldn't still be in it 100 years later. But the reserves are now precious status quo and the worst ones in Sask and Manitoba are like third-world levels of clean water and literacy. :( Some of the prairie/northern reserves have dog packs so feral they can't be handled and kids get attacked.

I just can't fathom people who abuse animals, especially dogs. Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. As long as you're kind to them, they'll repay you with love and loyalty. Actually, I've heard stories about dogs who still love their abusers and want to please them just because the desire to bond with humans is so deeply embedded in most dogs.

Cases of severe neglect like this make me especially angry. It's obvious you don't want the dog so just fucking give it up to an animal shelter or find someone who's willing to adopt it. Don't tie it up in your back yard and pretend it's not there. I want to fucking physically assault any asshole who does this.

I think they wanted a guard dog, but I'm betting they get so blackout drunk that they couldn't even hear the dog barking if an entire SWAT team were to descend upon them. Blackout drunk isn't exactly conducive to feeding/caring for anything, be it dog or child.

Funny thing, the term "Jungle Bunny" exists here but it does not refer to black people. It refers to white people whose attire of choice is mostly jeans and jean jackets, and they associate with First Nations people in order to drink.

I've known terminal alcoholics who were still very kind to their pets. These people are just shitty garbage people and while the booze might make it worse, they're just shit to the core and would be shit with or without alcohol.

I suppose it makes a difference depending on just how far they're going into the drunken rabbit hole (just enough to get "happy", or straight to blackout every time?), what their reasons for starting drinking in the first place were, and just how the alcohol affected them. Not everybody goes blackout drunk 24/7, I guess. Of course, natives will give the excuse that they were drinking to erase the trauma of residential school abuse or parental abuse as a result of residential school abuse, or trying to go blackout in hopes of seeing their ancestors or something in a quasi-dreamlike state. This would then be cited as part of an "abuse cycle" where the abused becomes an abuser because that's all they know.

A first nations hockey player once related a time he got blackout drunk, and he saw a vision of two indians in full traditional garb riding blood red horses and they told him that he was an embarrasment and that he'd die alone if he didn't stop drinking and clean up his act. So he did. If only all the drinking first nations got visions like this...

sounds like something obama would say.

either way, natives are savages. some people like to think they were pure souls, until the evil white man came and exterminated them. I always giggle when I hear such bullshit stories.

They all get lumped together as one mono-culture when nothing could be further from the truth. We're supposed to think of them all as tree hugging red skinned hippies that the white man destroyed. And while there are atrocities that's not the whole picture at all. There were tribes constantly warring with each other and attacking peaceful white settlers. The white devil wasn't committing all of the violence. But we aren't allowed to really bring that up.

It's a shame that they live in such poverty. But all of their problems aren't due to the white man. Only you can help you. Nothing is going to change and no amount of help you receive is going to do a lick of good unless you also are willing to help yourself. Many alcoholics don't see themselves as having a problem. Especially when it runs generations deep.

Back during the 1992 Commonwealth games, there was a couple from Europe who had come to see the games and we hung out with them. The guy had to laugh his ass off (after the fact, not at the exact time) when the Victoria and surrounding area First Nations invited the Maori - that had come all the way from New Zealand to dance - to a pow-wow. He told us that the Maori had EATEN the previous inhabitants of New Zealand (the Indigenous extinct Mori'ori people). I'd learned about the Maori and the Mori'ori in a textbook recently in school, but the textbook of course neglected to include that little factoid, and made it sound like the Mori'ori went extinct mysteriously.

One more reason to nuke North Korea. Fuck it, let's take over China while we're at it.

I understand that this is BC first nations, but man places like the Crow reservation in MT are worse than going to the ghetto in DC or Baltimore.

I was really shocked when I saw how the Crows lived on res land in MT. I was like WTF is this SE dc or what.

So I'm not suprised...anymore.
This sounds interesting. Please tell us more about the Crows.

I've heard similar horror stories from Inuit communities in Canada. From what I've been told, it's like a slice of the third world over there.
