I couldn't watch that 26 minute video, it's infuriating. He is playing Cuphead just like fucking Call of Duty: kill everyone in sight and, if you take damage, wait a few seconds to full health. Of course it's not going to work in an oldschool shooter, but he make the same mistakes again and again.

Fuckin' normie.

Well, it's time to call Cuphead a "Gamergate project aimed at defamation of gaming journalism".

It's funny how he's blaming it on GamerGate in the first place, even though it wasn't relevant since years ago and it only had a slight bit of relevancy because dumbass journalists still kept on harping the fuck about it. Sure, GamerGaters did find Dean's playthrough terrible but even then even those that despise GamerGate admit the gameplay vid was terrible as well. Even fucking TotalBiscuit who is controversial nowadays would say the same exact thing and even parodied it.

I'm more baffled how VentureBeat even decided to get him to do reporting as well as getting him to show gameplay of it in the first place since platforming is clearly not what he's best at though.

And another "journalist" of Kotaku/Polygon fame wades in to defend Dean.

Edit - It was some autist actually:
Forgive me for the little derail here but this isn't a journalist, all the stuff he has in his bio is trolling. Time for some sidecow action.
"commiesona" here is a fellow known as Tim Allanse, once upon a time using the nickname "kacho arino desu". Back when GamerGate started Tim here was on the GG side, but quickly became a pro-journalist suck-up.

Why did that happen? Because his most infamous escapades includes numerous attempts to extort nudes from GG aligned women while threatening that he will commit suicide from depression if they don't comply. When that didn't work he quickly turned traitor and now spends most of his time obsessing over his polar opposite fellow traitor, Ian Miles Cheong.
He also has a long and storied history with mombot, who knows a lot more than I do:

Dean, just letting you know, the reason you are getting death threats is just because people are jealous of you. I know, it's really petty. They are just jealous over your extremely cushy job of playing video games all day. Not fair, right? I mean, it's a job you seem to not even be very good at so it's probably pretty irksome to people stuck at work all day seeing someone get paid for something they would love to be doing. But that's just the average Trump supporter talking. These people, Dean, are not like you. They don't know the value of getting paid for doing nothing. They don't know what it's like to have friends who are equally unqualified chomping at the bit to back you up so you don't cry yourself to sleep every night over who the president is all while getting paid for playing video games that you are unable to even play.

It's them, Dean. Not you.

I feel like this whole thing would've blown over by now if every games journalist with a twitter account hadn't come flying out of the woodwork to defend Dean or go "Yes, BUT..." Even fucking George Wiedman of Super Bunny Hop fame jumped on this. It's rare to see a nerve get struck this hard.

Problem with Wiedman's statement, that can mean having videos from journalist that would be on par with how Dean played or with how the Doom video from Polygon was. If they still want someone like Dean as a reporter, they should get them a wingman that can show competency in playing a game then.

So according to Mr. Takahashi and his ilk, People criticizing game journalists for horrible gameplay=Conservative Donald Trump supporters? I don't think Evel Knievel could have made that jump.

I don't believe that these game journalists have to be god tier level players, but they could be competent at the games they're demonstrating at the very least. Somebody who's on the fence about purchasing a game could watch a video similar to this to help come to a buy-or-not decision. It's hacks like this that could misrepresent the game to some people as this overbearingly hard game with difficult controls, when it's really the negligence of the player, which could potentially harm sales numbers even though the game's fine. In my mind, that's why game journalists should put some effort into there gameplay. If the game's a glitchy piece of shit, it more often than not will show through.

Also in other related news of whiteknighting, Tim Schaefer butts in.

Gives a fuck you to the dead corpse of GamerGate while saying Dean is the best.

Geez, Tim can be an insufferable cunt. The guy should stop tweeting so much, and get back to working on the game that's going to come out 2 years late, and be a massive fucking disappointment for everyone who was gullible enough to fund it.

For the Trump thing, it may as well be some sort of defense mechanism to try and silence those being critical, nevermind the fact that sort of thing is a stupid way to try and silence others. Asking for competency is what most are for but then again, some people will try to use spergs and say "no, they're just toxic gamers that wanna shit on journos while demanding people as good as them". As for Schaeffer, it's a good way of showing how insufferable he is. Dig up the corpse of an autistic screeching match and white-knighting someone who played a game in a very crappy manner. Either way, Schaeffer falls under the same lines like other spergs such as Commiesona: give Dean an asspat while labeling any critic as an idiot.

God I detest those shitty paint by numbers retail job simulators.

No surprise this fuckwit likes them.

Of note is that Dean's incompetence playing video games has been a part of his journalistic style for many years. In 2008 he wrote a negative review of the first Mass Effect and then later apologized for it, admitting that he never bothered to figure out how the talent system worked before putting out his review. Then in 2016 he wrote an article on XCOM 2 where he complained about the difficulty of the game and admitted that he called up the developer because it was too hard for him.

I'd given this guy the benefit of the doubt with the cuphead thing, he'd been sent to a con and maybe he was playing a game that wasn't in his wheelhouse because he was the only guy from his publication there and it was the only opportunity to get hands on with a big new game.

XCOM 2 though... There's just no excuse. It's a game where you can take as much time as you like to consider your moves, requires no mechanical skill beyond using a mouse, the whole game is conducted in your head. Normal difficulty, while not a complete cakewalk, is easy enough if you've grasped the games mechanics.

If he dialled the difficulty back to rookie and he was still failing it's because he's too stupid or inattentive to understand the game. Someone who can't grasp the very simple concepts of a strategy game simply shouldn't be allowed to review games, period.

SidAlpha gives a nice rundown of Takahashi's incompetence as a game critic.

The takeaway is that he has a history of giving games like Mass Effect (never figured out how to use skill points) or X-Com 2 (never understood the gameplay basics) confused reviews that center on the perceived difficulty because he's completely inept. It's borderline insane (and thus hilarious) that people are covering for a hack game critic out of political reasons. Dean Takahashi must continue to write shitty reviews or Gamergate wiiins!

Doesn't just suck at simple logical "problems" a 10-year-old could solve but then uploads this... trainwreck of a video. After what Polygon did.
Jesus, he could even used that ala "Just wanted to poke a bit at Polygon ;)" but instead throws a fit..

Nah, dude. I don't buy that. I saw him in one of his comments saying something along the lines that the game is hard that's why there even needs to be a tutorial and mentioned Mario, implying he played it, because that one doesn't have one (on-screen, the older ones at least). So I assume he played AT LEAST some Mario game more than a decade ago.

You cannot tell me you played Mario but are stuck at one jump over a pillar.

He should thank God that there was a tutorial on-screen because only he knows how many decades it would have taken him to press random buttons to see what they do (the thing EVERY gamer instantly did back then, who didn't bother to read manuals)

We've had a couple threads on this topic already, but for those who aren't aware, I'll keep this brief. Dean Takahashi is a Japanese-American gaming journalist and contributor to the website VentureBeat, whom he's worked for since 2008. While it would be presumed that having that big of a portfolio within the gaming industry would lend to one being knowledgeable about how video games worked, Dean proved in spectacular fashion that he doesn't even grasp the basics of the medium. Allow me to recap;

Dean's troubles began August 24th of this year, when he published an article detailing his opinion on the demo to the highly anticipated indie game Cuphead. He described the game mostly in terms of it's difficulty, which he described as being quite hard. While that's a certainly reasonable position to take on a game, you quickly realize how full of shit he actually is when you take a look at the video he attached to the article. The video is quite long but even the first few minutes of it will suffice to show how legitimately terrible he is at comprehending even basic instructions in a video game;
https://youtube.com/watch?v=848Y1Uu5Htk(and for an added laugh, Takahashi proved his incompetence at journalism too by saying that Cuphead was made by Edmund McMillen, something that's now corrected in the article)

Dean's failure prompted immediate response from people from all corners of the internet, especially when a tweet from Ian Miles Cheong mocking him went viral. Dean's response to this has been all over the place, first doubling down and comparing the game to Dark Souls and demanding anyone criticizing him prove that they're better than him at the game that isn't out yet, then having the description of the YouTube video posted above edited to call Ian a shitlord and complain about the "racism, sexism, death threats, and calls for suicide" he's receiving, before most recently posting a followup article calling the people making fun of him "troglodytes" and describing the posts of his video as "political propaganda for the disenfranchised gamers, the sort who went from Gamergate to the alt-right and elected Donald Trump as president".

This situation is still unfolding, but of note is that articles about it are still coming out from various game journalism websites, here are just the ones that Google pulls up.

Some these articles are even more unhinged than what Takahashi himself is coming up with, for example this one written by one Willian Turton which takes the incident and compares it to everything from Ghostbusters to Brianna Wu to Donald Trump for some reason. The white knights seem to be coming out hard for this one and it's going to be fun seeing where they go with this.

Vimeo with inexplicable videos of him exercising
possible Tumblr that he uses to watch gay porn and hypnosis videos

Has anyone seen his response to the criticism in his own Youtube video?

quality shit right here. Just read how he thinks the devs should cater him and dumb down the game.
