Teenagers always want to be adults and overestimate their ability to handle adult situations. They also want sex. Some people use those kinds of apps to find friends. Teenagers make bad decisions all the time.

From 2012 to 2016 they allowed users as young as 13 years old to join. :islamic: That just screams child grooming, because no sane adult would think that young teens need to have access to dating apps, regardless of the limits that are in place. That won't keep the creeps away, that's just a challenge for them.

Also, since it's through Facebook, anyone can lie about their DOB and automatically end up in weird dating pools. I can't tell you how many profiles say "I know it says 20-something years, but I'm only 17 lol."

As for why, well, the short answer teens are dumb. Alternate short answer is that lots of people join dating apps to meet friends a la Bumble. The long answer is that age gap relationships aren't uncommon for adults, even up to and exceeding a decade of difference, so teens think 3-5 years isn't that big of a difference in the name of fucking twuuuuuueeeee wuuuuuuv. They don't see the maturity and power disparity in those years, or they believe they can deal with it.

As a freshman in high school, I thought I was hot shit when a senior about to graduate would hit on me. As a senior, I realized that was skeevy as fuck because high school freshman look like fetuses and have the maturity of unsalted peanuts. Perspective and context is everything, and teens just don't have enough life experience to recognize their own stupidity yet.

Could be worst it could have been one those prison camps in the desert that kids get taken to blind folded in a windowless van. I'm not being facetious these exist and they keep you even after you reach the age of majority.

Those are for kids from overly Christian families who like metal music and same sex relationships too much, I'm sure a few cutters end up there but most go to mental wards for a while.

There are ones just for sexually abused, exploited or raped teenagers. They advertise as being an alternative to therapy and psychiatric hospitals. Group therapy at one is the other kids and the "councilor" using sexual insults towards you, blaming you for being raped, reenacting your rape/trauma and other horrible shit.

Mental hospital aren't all bad, there are some shit ones ran more like prisons, but usually you get out once you're stabilized and go to a day program for group therapy while you wait for a appointment slot to open up for a therapist or psychiatrist. Getting into therapy may take 1-2 months. Parents don't want to risk the chance of cutting from mental distress to actually be attempts of suicide, I don't blame OP's mom for sending her to the loony bin. Not something I would personally do however.

Sometimes teenagers don't know how to get themselves out of a shitty situation, I had a high school friend in a similar relationship and getting checked into a mental ward was the safest place she could have been at the time. I don't think OP's mom did anything particularly wrong.
 
Only found this thread a few days ago, and just remembered one of my old personal lolcows was a little. It was okay, she barely talked about it, but she was a nanny and referred to the kids she looked after as her kids. It was pretty weird.
