Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faced a stern rebuke from congressional colleagues for citing skin color in voting against a white federal judge nominee earlier this week.

Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor Wednesday that the nomination of Marvin Quattlebaum, a white lawyer who is a partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Greenville, S.C., “speaks to the overall lack of diversity in President Trump’s selections for the federal judiciary.”
He complained that many of Trump’s nominees have been white males. He also complained that Republicans previously held up two black judges nominated under the Obama administration for the position— which The Post and Courier notes has long been vacant.

“It is long past time that the judiciary starts looking a lot more like the America it represents,” Schumer said. “Having a diversity of views and experience on the federal bench is necessary for the equal administration of justice.”

The senator said that with Quattlebaum’s nomination, the Trump administration was “taking a giant step backwards” in terms of diversity.

Quattlebaum was ultimately confirmed to the district judgeship on Thursday, 69-29.

Republican lawmakers, meanwhile, slammed Schumer for his statements.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Thursday it was actually Schumer’s vote against Quattlebaum that was “a massive step backward.”

While Schumer “is not a racist,” Graham tweeted, “this was an absolutely shameful reason to vote against a very qualified nominee like Marvin Quattlebaum.” He added, “Voting against a highly qualified nominee because of the color of his skin does nothing to bring our country and nation together.”

Don Beatty and Alison Lee were both nominated by the Obama administration to fill the federal judgeship.

Sen. Tim Scott, also a Republican serving South Carolina and the GOP’s sole black senator, tweeted, “Perhaps Senate Democrats should be more worried about the lack of diversity on their own staffs than attacking an extremely well-qualified judicial nominee from the great state of South Carolina.”

Schumer asserted that the only reason Quattlebaum was nominated for the unoccupied position was because the state’s Republican senators didn’t return their “blue slips” — a blue form used by senators to voice approval or disapproval for a home state nominee — for Obama nominees Alison Lee and Don Beatty in 2013.

Democrats have said that Republicans used blue slips to block about 18 of Obama’s nominations, arguing the denial of a hearing for a nominee without two blue slips was fine with Republicans then. Democrats said the policy shouldn’t change just because the person who sits in the White House is different.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., countered on Twitter that Lee’s nomination “was withdrawn because of a significant bond issue” and Beatty eventually was appointed as the Chief Justice of the state’s Supreme Court.

I saw this the other day from an entirely different source and I'd just assumed they were exaggerating because the right wing sources like Daily Caller and Information Liberation tend to go out of their way to make things worse than they actually sound, but I saw the story repeatedly pop up in a load of other sources and he actually did say that during the nominee hearing, at around 0:30 in the video.

They have to be intentionally trying to lose the midterms or something at this rate, how in the name of Hell could he possibly think that choosing to start declining judicial nominees based on the colour of their skin is going to help win back that huge chunk of Middle America that the Democrats lost in 2016? I am genuinely trying to rationalize with you here, Democrats, please help me understand how this is a winning strategy.

What the Hell are the Democrats even going to campaign on, at this point? "We'll raise your taxes, open the borders and take all your guns away. Also fuck white people?" There's no way that they can't hear how bad this sounds. The midterms and the 2020 elections need to hurry the Hell up because I want to see this dumpster fire so badly.

The Democrats are stuck in a paradox, and I don't see them getting out of it unless something revolutionary were to happen. I've encountered this too many times in my friends circle, and they actually believe this shit.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing wrong with Democrats, but so many of them are delusional about what's wrong anymore, I'm finding myself siding with Republicans way more.

This is why term limits and age limits should be a thing in Congress.

In a nutshell you have, whether you meant to or not, described how Trump won.

I feel so bad for rank-and-file Democrats who want to see Trump pushed out of the White House and replaced with a candidate they actually like, and aren't part of that rabid Anti-Trump crowd, because watching people like Schumer pull this kind of stuff has to be absolutely hair-pulling. It's like they're doing everything they can to triple-down on every single reason that people refused to vote for them and for Hillary in the first place. I've never seen anything like this before.

I wonder what's more likely, a complete collapse of the Democratic party or the remaining sane ones breaking off to form a new party?

“It is long past time that the judiciary starts looking a lot more like the America it represents,”

FUCK OFF

I am so sick of this bullshit. Representative government doesn't mean representation as in the brain dead, faux diversity Hollywood bullshit. It means representing ideas, you morons. If you are such a narcissistic waste of life who needs to have your Congress people look like you, as if that means anything, then fucking kill yourself.

I hear ya, man. I was part of the Sanders crowd, but after the disappointment of the Dems nominating Hillary, I had a strange feeling I knew it was basically over for them having any chance of winning the election - if Sanders were to have gotten the nomination, I have a feeling he would have more success than Hillary did. I was never anti-Trump, but I would've preferred something else, but no way in Hell am I associating with such a shoddy enterprise known as the Clintons.

At this point, could we just go back to the Obama days where the worst we got was the occasional accusation of him being the Anti-Christ, and not every second?

Schumer should off himself for being a member of the white male devil class. He probably looks at himself in the mirror every morning and tells himself what a piece of shit he is for being a white male anyways.

"Why are so many white males committing school shootings?"

Gee wiz it's almost like telling people they're scum 24/7 isn't good for their mental health or something.

I'm glad the progressive element of this country has finally progressed to the point where they no longer condemn a person's candidacy for a position based on how they look.

After Trump kicked his ass over the government shutdown, I'm not surprised Chuck You Schumer will stoop lower than his fake sobfest the first month Trump was in office and issued the travel ban.

Chuck Schumer demonstrates what America would look like if its elected officials were cargo cultists.

Travel ban? That's racist, how dare you!

Employment/education bans to fill quotas? A-ok!

It would not surprise me to see media outlets covering this positively in the coming days. The problem is that while the left is technically winning the culture war in terms of aesthetics, it doesn’t do them any good come election time. They can drum up outrage and synthesize as many racial divides as they like but as long as private voting remains a thing, it’ll all just be skin deep. If they want outrage culture to win them elections they’ll have to get rid of voting booths and make everyone accountable to their peers.

And this is Chuck Schumer himself doing this, not some low-profile backbench Democrat. He's supposed to be one of the wise elders of the party, certainly he sees himself that way, so this is shocking.
