An Ontario family is calling for changes to medical assistance in dying (MAID) after the death of their son in B.C.

Kiano Vafaeian was 26 years old when he received MAID on Dec. 30.

His family says he lived with Type 1 diabetes and partial vision loss, but says that his biggest struggle was his mental health, which they believe should have made him ineligible for MAID.

“He said everything the doctors needed to hear in order to approve him,” Margaret Marsilla, Vafaeian’s mother, said. “Was he actually feeling that way? I strongly believe not.”

Vafaeian’s family said he first sought MAID in Ontario, where he was from, but was repeatedly denied for several years.

They said that is when he turned to B.C., where he was approved.

“He didn’t have the items necessary to qualify for MAID and quite frankly, the system failed him,” Joseph Caprara, Vafaeian’s stepfather, said.

Under Canada’s MAID law, Track 2 applies to people who are not terminally ill, but who have a serious and incurable condition.

It comes with additional safeguards, including a minimum 90-day assessment period and evaluations by two independent practitioners.

The family says a prominent MAID advocate, Dr. Ellen Wiebe, signed their son’s death certificate and alleges the safeguards were not fully followed.

“We believe she was coaching him in order for her to check off her own boxes to approve him,” Marsilla said.

In a statement to Global News, Wiebe said that each patient she has provided MAID to had a grievous and irremediable medical, not psychiatric, condition, adding each of them was capable of consent and that all Track 2 assessments took at least 90 days.

Randall White, an independent expert at the UBC Department of Psychiatry, told Global News that mental health issues often accompany conditions seen in Track 2 MAID cases.

“Are those conditions — those mental health conditions accompanying these other conditions — are they adequately assessed?” he said.

“Are they diagnosed even before MAID is a consideration? I would question that.”

B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne said the government will continue to learn from everyone’s experiences and make any changes that might be warranted.

Look, if you don't value your life, I don't see why I should be expected to.

At the same time, I'm a taxpayer, and I would see MAID (if implemented in my country) as a waste of my money. If you want to kill yourself, sort your own shit out.

Still, if I'm going to support the death sentence I don't want a bunch of suicidals commiting crimes just so daddy government will kill them like they want.

Someone who is good with civics, help me reconcile these positions.

Pragmatically? You'd need a torture penalty too for heinous crimes, to deter suicidal cowards. I also don't really know how to square this with modern ethics though

A safe and peaceful suicide should be an option. And mandatory for anyone who disagrees with me.
A death from “maid” isn't peaceful. The drugs they use paralyze you and you basically drown painfully.

Edit: Also the covid shots have caused so much illness and death (not this guy in the article). Government makes you sick, then offers shitty or no health care and then they will conveniently help kill you when you are suffering and in pain.

Its delusional to claim most of these people would have killed themselves otherwise.
This man had tried to get MAID for years in Ontario, but didn't kill himself after being denied again and again. He was not willing to kill himself outside of MAID. Diabetes and partial blindness wouldn't keep a 26 yr old from physically killing himself.

She's a literal serial killer and she found a way to get away with killing people. She admits she killed over 400 people as of July 2024, god knows how many by now with the increase in MAID.

“I’ve always loved being a doctor and I delivered over 1,000 babies and I took care of families, but this is the very best work I’ve ever done in the last seven years.

Dropping someone in an oubliette and forgetting about them counts as a death sentence, and I doubt most suicidals would pick dehydration/starvation/exposure over the alternatives. Real shame about the whole "cruel and unusual punishment" thing.

Type 1 beetus can be a real trip into the inner circles of hell for some. Imagine injecting yourself six times a day with insulin and suffering shit like losing your eyesight at 25. If he was depressed, well no shit sherlock, a lot of people would be. Folx are just pissed that they don't get to have their kid to fawn over any more. 26, made his own decisions, docs approved it, so fuck off old fucks and get on with your lives.

Death penalty isn't immediate anyway, you languish for 15-20+ years of appeals before it's carried out and the drugs they use to do it aren't nice. Allegedly they knock you out but what they give you suppresses your diaphragm and stops your heart so you just feel like you're suffocating. And that's the good stuff they're running out of, having to look for alternatives. The alternative drug apparently burns like searing pain in your veins as it works.

What are we doing, man? We have guns. Blow their head off from behind with a fifty cal, most painless death I think most of us can imagine.

It takes 'Killing with kindness' to a whole literal level.

You ever notice when disgruntled people in the US complain about the US and talk about leaving it, many articles online talk about going to some country in Europe, while it's rare to hear people talk about going to Canada? Canada is an easy country for people to get to, and aside from Quebec, there is no language barrier.

Canada does not seem to be the first go-to destination that many people think of, when leaving for greener pastures.
Well yeah, they only pick majority-white countries.

Can't be messy and scary, gotta make the observers feel humane rather than actually be humane, fucking narcissistic ethical cargo cult "it looks so clinical and painless so therefore it is" dimwits.

Here's how I'd do executions: a massive press with the crushing chamber piston driven by rapid gas expansion: just liquefy death row inmates as fast as the Titan submarine imploded. No ambiguity, no chance to feel anything, can't ever miss. All the moralizing faggots who think that that is "worse" for the executed because it looks nastier get to scrub down the chamber.

Look, I hate MAiD, but if, as you say, your son was consistently trying to off himself for several years, you have only yourself to blame. Have you tried making his life less shit?

yeah the "he would have just jumped off a bridge otherwise" argument is bullshit.
Maybe he conscientiously didn't want to traumatize first responders and wanted to give his whiny soyfaggot family an opportunity to put some money or other resources where their mouths would otherwise be.
