A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I have absolutely no personal interest in geedubstism (anymore, had a fleeting love affair years ago but the £££ killed it for me) but it's a fundamental aspect of BRIISH KULTAH regardless, it's truly quintessential and I think it does more for our influence than most aid programs... enjoys perpetual year on year growth too.

Call me paranoid but I've seen the type of stuff that happens here and there's nothing to gain by opening yourself up to it.

Every time I go into town I always start to doubt statistics and shit like that. I still wouldn't know how to bring up the 'do you want to build a massive navy and vassalise half the entire planet' question. The point is that if they're from place that it's normal to rape, one just has to look at a woman and say I'll have her and goes ahead and try to get her, the other follows and joins in. The attack is believed to have occurred outside Epsom Methodist Church in Ashley Road, Epsom.

Det Insp Aine Matthews said: "We understand this is an extremely distressing incident and the victim is being supported by specialist officers."

Police said that it currently did not have full descriptions of the suspects but officers were conducting extensive inquiries to identify and locate them.

The problem is that it would be kinda unjust. Ok yes. Everyone in the general public is going to heavily suspect the migrants and they're probably going to be right. But the police can't. The precedent that 'well he was most likely to be a criminal' isn't a good one to set. Yea the migrants are more likely to be rapists so suspect all of those. Also all the white people are more likely to be committing hate speech offences online so let's just let the police barge into anyone's house to confiscate their electronics.

Also realistically they know. The woman obviously has the ability to describe them to police and has done so already. They just won't instantly release that because they want as much information as possible and don't want to let the rapists know the amount of information they have. It just makes for better evidence if someone independently identifies those sorts of people. The police basically want to hear what they already know plus extra, if you tell them what they already know then it makes the extra part more solid. It also makes it easier to cut out dead ends. If you don't say anything about them at all then it's a lot easier to remove a white guy or a black guy in different clothing, it's harder to cut that out if everyone knows the rough description of the suspect. They'll probably say 'yea it was a group of migrants' in a few days and ask for more information on that and probably release a photo.

Obviously assuming that the police are sensible and do their jobs properly. Whether they follow it or not, that's the logic.
