A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The Home Office is launching a new pilot where up to £10,000 per person will be given for people who cooperate with the system.

Around 150 families - including children - are expected to take part in the trial, to see if it can help save money.
They hope that if rolled out more widely, it can save the Home Office up to £20million a year.
LBC spoke with the Home Secretary about the plans last week on a visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, where she took inspiration from the Danes for our migration system.

They pay families up to £30,000 in order to leave quickly.
She said she wanted to pay people more than the £3,000 they're currently getting in a bid to try and encourage more to leave, quicker.

Probably need some sort of embedded microchip to ensure you don't get the same person coming over and over. Got a microchip or scars where it was? No admittance. But in all honestly I don't think even in that unlikely system it would solve the problem you'd create which would be get someone to go over, collect their winnings, return and split the money with your trafficker. Who cares if you stop the same person coming twice, there's an unlimited supply of people to do it with.

It might work, but only in conjunction with strict controls on those arriving.

EDIT: I also note that in their photograph, it's 80% women migrants whilst the actual figures are majority men. Just an observation.

Imagine what you could do with 10 grand. How much good could you do with 10 grand in your community? I bet you could fix a lot of pot holes. You could do a damn good clean up of your town. Probably even put some of it towards helping the natural parts around you. Build a small pound or put in a football pitch right? Stuff your kids would get a better life from.

Rung one is encourage them to leave of their own accord. If that doesn't work then it's rung two, forcible deportation to a country willing to take them. If that doesn't work, then there is a final solution to the migrant question. End of the day we can't let them stay forver, if we did let them push the UK gov around then democracy would fail.

I'm not against spending money to get rid of the filth, but paying them to leave really is just a 'wog-geld' and it would be rapidly integrated into the large and sophisticated network of QUANGOs as an extra revenue stream...to be used to bring in even more browns. You can't pay a jackal to fuck off from eating you, at best it'll just take the money and eat you regardless.

Sweden does something along these lines. The amount is far lower and I believe uptake has been minimal. But there were plans to up the amount by a lot to something like $34,000 which is a fortune in many of the countries migrants are from. Though less than it costs to feed and house a migrant so in theory it's a netgain. However, big risk of Danegeld effect. Or 'Give a Mouse a Cookie', depending on how intellectual you are. Honestly, unless combined with some very strong new measures to discourage immigration, I see this as incentivising more immigration.

There are two things here. The first is that @LXXVII Brigade idea of an escalating system is, imho, slightly off. You don't want escalation, you want pincer. Or carrot and stick. If you do this at all you look at the way Trump's administration is doing this in the USA where you both create an environment of risk for staying and provide a safe and incentivised way to leave voluntarily. Or if you prefer, the same principle as the "cauldrons" Russia uses in Ukraine - surround but leave an exit route, because the enemy leaving voluntarily is less costly for you than if they fight. Never surround an enemy and leave them no escape route because they hunker down. That's the role of a policy like this - not to rely on it as an inducement but as a greased exit ramp that people will use to escape other measures. Otherwise they just go to ground and it can take a long time to winkle them out. It has to be part of a wider plan but is not necessarily a bad idea in itself.

The other thing is that there's a Solomon's Wisdom aspect to this, liken to when he threatened to cut the baby in half. The real asylum seekers can't go home. Economic migrants can. This is a very effective way to distinguish between the two. What you do with that information afterwards is another thing but it's worth noting.
