A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I don't think it was ever in doubt that niggel was the textbook definition of controlled opposition, I still think the final outcome will be reform deforming itself into the tories like the cancer that it is, the overton window shift is worth holding your nose actually voting wise but anyone who goes full true believer needs bringing down to earth.

Wow, I've just realised what is going on! @Made In Wales is making Refrom look inept so we all flock to Homeland! He wants us to all go join Homeland epic outdoor orgies training camps and we all get AIDS white nationalism.

The only way someone could pretend to act so retarded is if he really wanted you got get drunk on a camping trip so he could suck you dick if he was playing an epic game of 4D chess and was recruiting to to le hecking extremists.

Or if we have the only smart taffy policeman in the world posting here.

Ah, so you can't or won't answer the question, good to know.

@Chunky Salsa Same here, you're actually alright (unlike some on here) but no matter what I say nobody's listening so I'm done with the Newsthread and the people herein.

It's actually others who can't take criticism or being told 'no, I disagree' and think that I'm optimistic when they are actually quite happy deep down for things to continue as they are.

I'll still post elsewhere here but IRL myself and Reform UK can't win the revolution sat at desks waiting for things to happen.

In the end, the people here got what they wanted so pats on the back all round.
LOL did you really have a 'I'm taking my toys and going home' meltdown?
Goddamn that's hilarious. This needs a donation to Jersh to be pinned on the front page.

In lighter news, though, Digital ID has been crushed again SEETHE TONY!!!!

There is hardly anything in the story but another Starmer thing u-turned. The UK, as noted earlier, does not have the infrastructure to support this act.

Why would anyone here support Homeland? Didn't they have a schism and fall apart a few months ago? Anyways ignoring that, you'd be a retard to vote for a party with actual nazi's. Aside from the optics, why would you want to support a bunch of German-nationalists in England?

Rupert Lowe off to the boozer, because hes not banned from his local unlike Starmer. Archive of the news for posterity. Quote from Lisa Smart (LibDem) "No 10 must be bulk ordering motion sickness tablets at this rate to cope with all their U-turns." :story:
The government has dropped plans to make it compulsory to have digital ID in order to prove a right to work, the BBC understands.
Digital checks on a person's right to work will be mandatory but workers will not have to offer a digital ID and will be able to use other documents such as a passport.
This marks a shift from last year when the government first announced the policy and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told an audience: "You will not be able to work in the United Kingdom if you do not have digital ID. It's as simple as that."
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said "Good riddance. It was a terrible policy anyway."
She said the move by Labour represented "another U-turn".
When it first announced the policy plan, the government had argued that mandatory digital ID for workers would make it easier to clamp down on immigrants working illegally.
The scheme, it is understood, will now deal less narrowly with immigration and focus more on improving access to public services.
Asked about the issue at an Institute for Government conference earlier on Tuesday, Darren Jones, the minister responsible for rolling out the policy, said it would be a "route to the digital transformation of customer-facing public services".
He said a consultation would be launched "very shortly", adding: "I'm confident this time next year the polling will be in a much better place on digital ID than it is today."
The Liberal Democrats said the policy was "doomed to failure" from the start and called for "the billions of pounds earmarked for their mandatory digital ID scheme" to be spent "on the NHS and frontline policing instead".
The party's Cabinet Office spokesperson, Lisa Smart, said: "No 10 must be bulk ordering motion sickness tablets at this rate to cope with all their U-turns."
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said in a post on X: "This is a victory for individual liberty against a ghastly, authoritarian government. Reform UK would scrap it altogether."
Green Party leader Zack Polanski welcomed the news on X, saying: "The government have U-turned on ID cards. Good."

Only caught the BBC version of the story on the telly. But the story was "IDs won't be mandatory but they will make things easier to access". Which means they will be mandatory in all but name. You technically don't need to use the internet to access things.. but you do. Technically you can go to the library and fill in a paper form but no ones going to do that. They're still pushing a digital system and just won't call it ID and give you a card (unless you want one, and they will make you want one)

I don't like the dog piling on Welshy. He's been misguided but he's not a bad lad and I don't want to see all the brown faggots in the thread getting onto him. I hope after a good nights sleep and a pot noodle he can come back with a clear head. I was harsh on him, but I never intended to dog pile him and drive him out of the thread. He's an asset to the thread and he doesn't usually act like a twitter tranny. Hope he's not drinking himself to death and will unblock everyone and apologise tomorrow like all good mates do when they act like a twat.

I fucking love watching gov sponsored agitprop backfire completely and utterly, they're just so bad at it.

He's shown that he's a thin skinned faggot who can't face the real world.
He's probably gathered his velcro gloves and headed to the nearest field to take out his tension on the local leisure centre.

This is how it went last time, too. They actually got as far as trialling national ID cards under Blair after watering down the original plan. Now they've started walking back this one, so I expect we'll get something similar, with a limited trial that ends up being quietly abandoned after a very short period.
