A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Reform are fucking idiots if they think this is helping them. They're never going to win London over. It's not happening. So you say fuck London, no one cares. Then you advertise how you're going to take from London and give to other places. Stop the bias towards throwing money at London and letting every where else rot. Can't say I am personally too thrilled with the news, re: Zahawi, but it's Nigel's choice and TBF he will bring a lot of experience to the table.

It's a warm welcome, but also shows that the 'waah, Reform UK are racist!' line no longer works.

We have to be a broad church, and to also remember that the average voter is not like most people on here - if Reform UK can pivot towards Joe Average whilst also retaining 'Big Baz' then it will gain a lot of votes, hopefully enough to carry us into office before long.

As for Tories which Reform UK will never accept, anybody who backed remaining and is more of a Rory Stewart than an Andrew Bridgen or Robert Jenrick - two men who I believe will also be joining Reform UK as well as Laura Trott and Mims Davies. Suella Braverman has also been heavily linked but, as with Jacob Rees-Mogg, I doubt she will ever not be a Tory (JRM would have been a great capture for Reform UK, but I think he is more interested with life outside the political arena these days).

At least Reform UK are now setting their stall out and getting things organised - JUST in case.

It's interesting how the party at the top level is being managed by the 'TradCons' but the actual grass-roots and Councillors are former Labour or Socialist leaning. Yet, it works very well.

As for London, well don't forget that most Londoners want Khan out (even the Muslims there hate him) but we need a candidate who can win enough votes.

There's none. At this point Reform is just the tories under a new name. While I was away I did a lot of traveling and spoke to many people in Reform areas. They've seen nothing to stop the decline. They're in an even worse state than they were before Reform got in. Reform were supposed to cut down on waste spending and redirect it into improving the country. The gay pride events are still fully funded and supported by the councils. While pot holes are so bad people are having their tires destroyed by them.
