A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The Times reports that Senior Labour MPs are calling on Keir to strip el-Fattah of his citizenship due to his hateful tweets.
Sir Keir Starmer is facing calls from senior Labour MPs to strip Alaa Abd el-Fattah of his British citizenship, as No 10 said the prime minister was unaware of past comments made by the Egyptian dissident.
Ministers were among those who criticised an apparent failure to conduct background checks on the British-Egyptian man who was freed from jail and welcomed back to the UK this week by Starmer.
They privately called the prime minister’s intervention “ridiculous” and “shocking”, and said Fattah should lose the British citizenship he gained in December 2021.
On Sunday the Foreign Office issued a statement condemning Fattah’s past remarks, which included calling for the death of Zionist civilians and suggesting people burn Downing Street during the 2011 London riots, calling them “abhorrent”.

It is understood that Fattah’s posts were not known to Starmer, Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, or David Lammy, the deputy prime minister and justice secretary, when they all offered similar messages of support on Boxing Day marking his release.
However, senior Labour MPs said Starmer had lost the trust of British Jews.
One minister said: “It’s truly shocking that we’ve welcomed a racist antisemite into our country with open arms. Serious questions need to be asked about the lack of judgment here and the Home Office should seriously be contemplating stripping him of his British citizenship.”
Another senior Labour MP said: “Letting in a [man] with a history of rampant antisemitism and anti-Zionism crossing the line into terror supporting and calling for the death of all Zionists is ridiculous and bad enough. But after Bondi Beach and the Manchester synagogue attack when the PM said he’d do everything to make the Jewish community feel safe, this looks and sounds like a kick in the face. Fattah should undoubtedly lose his British citizenship.”
I imagine Labour Friends of Israel are very pissed about this. However it gets funnier; Egypt is also looking to remove his citizenship (and I bet they just strip people of it no fucking human rights involved), which will leave Keir in the position of leaving this guy stateless. Kemi and Nigel also want him stripped of his citizenship, not even 12 hours after the government was celebrating his return.
The Telegraph (link if archive is not working https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politic...laa-abd-el-fattah-egyptian-social-media-posts) is reporting that he did not go through the "good character" or Life in the UK tests to gain British citizenship, because of a 2019 Supreme Court ruling which found the check incompatible with the ECHR when citizenship is passed from a UK-born mother. If we hadn't had so many other fuckups I would call this the mother of all fuck ups tbh.

Starmer will do nothing, he's quite smug about letting this loony back into the country.

I only hope that, if the idiot commits a jihad or terrorist atrocity, that Starmer and those who wanted his return are openly horse-whipped in public.

The hardline muzzies are the only group left that will support Labour, no way he's stripping him of citizenship.

If anything, he'd go up in polls for forcibly deporting all Jews from the UK.

Once again I must point to the sign that says [UNLESS THERE IS A DIRECT LEGAL ACTION WHEREBY SOMEONE WITH AUTHORITY ABOVE STARMER CAN FORCE HIM VIA THREAT OF REMOVAL, HE'S JUST GOING TO IGNORE YOU/ME/THEM]

Nothing will happen as a result of people complaining.

Also Merry Christmas, my break ended and I am back at GCHQ. Hope you all enjoyed the Turkey, I certainly did, but my dog took a shit the size of an actual baby in the park on Boxing Day as my grandad had been feeding it custard creams all Christmas night 'as a treat'. I also got a watch from.my mother, and a T shirt that says "Retarded and Ready to rumble" from my sister. Wonderful.

Oh and watched both Muppets Christmas Carol and Scrooged.

Good Doggo!

At least it wasn't Brussels Sprouts - you'd have to stand downwind of Poochie were that the case.

Good Doggo!
I've been getting it to lose weight because it legit started looking like a sausage in shape. But it absolutely loves biscuits dipped in tea, I told my grandad it'll mess up the dogs teeth and as a result he's purchased some dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush. Fucker thinks he's funny lmao.

The Starmer issue will most likely go to the Senior MPs, and he will suck up to them. This is due to the ever-shrinking gap of power he has now. He faces a Labour civil war shortly, and this gives Streeting free red meat. Him also saying "I am delighted" is the funniest shit, it makes him look insanely inept. I did not need to do any opsec for this, as it was all there. This is a really bad blunder, even for him.

At least he has the requisite chompers to be Bri'ish.

Anglos, what's it like to be ruled by people who not only openly despise you, but will act to your obvious detriment so long as all of the paperwork is in order?
Tbh it's fucking soul destroying. Worse given I knew things would get worse if commie bastards but had to hear countless spastics, with no awareness of how the Uni party hates us, say they thought things would improve with this bunch in charge.

My employer has a presence abroad and I'm on a job track which will get me out of here in 9-12 months. I worry that's too long though.

And with healthcare with a sanctioned method of killing anyone they deem unworthy of care.

All I want for Christmas is the wholesale dismantling of the NHS and all the mid tier managers lynched.
What do you replace it with, though? This is a deliberate (vaguely-) managed decline meant to get people angry enough with the sheer mess of the NHS that they’ll call for any alternative - ie private health insurance. It’s a method that’s been employed by governmental overlords at various lower levels (my local hospital was one), and now they’ve done it on a national scale. The Tories always despised the NHS and wanted for-profit healthcare like the yanks. Labour are just Tories in red ties now. The shit really hit the fan with Blair and his idiocy that expanded pointless middle-management of the NHS almost overnight. It didn’t work to make the NHS work better, and everything since has just been a case of ‘just keep it barely going until people realise private healthcare is better’.

Problem is, private healthcare isn’t better. Health outcomes in America are the same as ours, yet they spend insane amounts more for the privilege. Private healthcare here is basically cancer insurance, as they barely treat anything else (and certainly not long-term health issues, nor anything you had when you signed up - which can be construed very unfairly). There’s an enormous swathe of people in the U.K. who couldn’t afford private healthcare anyway, and that’s before you factor in the millions of immigrants who want it all for free.

Sorry, I know you were just making a passing comment - and one I absolutely sympathise with. I’m just an angry flightless New Zealand bird over the state of the NHS and evidently I haven’t been to Greggs yet this morning.

The German insurance system runs pretty well. Maybe after we get the trains to run on time and resettle the boat monkeys in the east we can change to that.

I've lived in the States, have family and friends there, and have dealt with healthcare there.

It's far from perfect but it is infinitely better than here.

Id favour private healthcare for those who can afford it. Government paid for private care for those out of work. Fucking sod all for long term benefit leeches. Or, my personal preference, boot out anyone non-white and their kids, slap down the BMA and the AHCP regulatory bodies, cut the red tape which throttles recruitment, scrap degree based qualifications for AHCPs. Bring back nurse housing on site on hospitals. Bring back cottage hospitals.

Basically there's not a single problem we have that can't be solved or at least alleviated if we get shot of all non nature brits. The sheer amount of cash this will free up (along with immediate scrapping of all foreign aid, with the exception of temporary emergency relief to friendly countries who've experienced natural disasters) will be enough to do this.

Hell, the reduction in pressure on jobs and homes will even mean the wholesale destruction of communities via enforced geographical mobility will slow. So old people will have family nearby to look after them.

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas and all that jazz.
