A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It’s the same as having ‘safe shooting spots’ for drug addicts to inject, and legal saunas and brothels to stop the spread of STDs. None of it works as claimed, it simply shows that society has given up trying to keep order. Slapping a bandage on a wound is nowhere near as helpful as preventing the wound in the first place, but if you say that you’ll get “at least the bleed kits are helping! You want people to do nothing? Fascist, Nazi” etc etc etc.

In a decent society you shouldn’t have to go round carrying Narcan, bleed kits, extra strong dental dams and wearing stab-proof clothing. I know the argument would be “well it’d be nice not to have to lock our doors but we do”, but at some point society has to say no. That seems to be the main problem with the U.K. lately. No-one says no any more. It’s considered cruel, fascist, -phobic, or -shaming. Everything has to be tolerated because everyone has the right to be their ‘authentic’ selves. Only, that doesn’t lead to a coherent society, it leads to total fucking chaos with no-one giving a shit about anyone else.

Why all the shanking? Why this stupid bullshit about ‘respect’ that goes so far as to kill someone if they don’t show you the deference you believe you deserve? Why all the drugs and thieving - why aren’t there jobs for our young people? Why is it seen as acceptable to stab or otherwise hurt someone, for anything? Who’s giving young people these ideas?

There needs a root and branch rethink in this country, because as things stand it’s nosediving and shows no signs of getting better.

Nope, I just think peace in Ukraine is considered the best thing for the US therefore that's why it's being pushed so heavily. Europe is fucking weak and poor right now after the horrifying realisation that Russia isn't going to 'lose' and pay reparations so all of the money spent will have to be accounted for, all of the money donated to Ukraine will have to be written off and Europe will have to start rebuilding their economies with every budget in the red. Plus it feels like the US have been wanting to pull out of Ukraine for a while now but obviously can't do it while the war is still on as it'd completely trash European relations. Better for them to just burn Ukraine in the peace deals and try and resume business as usual.

A poor Spain or Germany means poor Spanish and Germans who won't buy US goods. A Spain or Germany with cheap Russian gas might be able to kickstart their economy to some degree and lead to richer Spanish and Germans who will buy more US goods and keep everything ticking over.
