A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The fact that my money will actually be supporting a vegan/vegetarian movement is enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth. Even if Greggs gets the £X or whatever it costs for a sausage roll, that's a vote of confidence in that product that means they will likely keep making it.

It tickles the deepest embers of my dead heart when I see another vegan company fail. Beyond Meat is currently running at about a -$601 million loss last year alone. "Sustainability" gets shit loads of thought until they realise they have to make the books sustainable.

We need to bring back multi generational homes and families living in the same area. Women look after the old people the same way they look after the young ones. That's the natural human family dynamics and instead we turn it into a job and an economic drain. We pay people to care for our elderly and young so our wives can go to work to earn money to...pay for elderly care and child minders.

The reality of looking after a demented elderly parent is a living hell.

Some women are comfortable and businesslike with the idea of seeing their mother naked, wiping her arse and changing incontinence pads… others wouldn’t be. Then there’s the additional mental toll of dealing with their confusion, having the same circular conversation all day every day. Witnessing the sundowning, the aggression and rage, the fear in their face as they beg to see their mother or father (dead for decades). Their eventual inability to recognise who you even are. The person you love dies years before their body finally gives up.

And this is a mother-daughter scenario. It’s even worse when it’s the father. Men can become extremely physically and sexually abusive when dementia hits.

As much as I agree that care homes are terrible places (I’ve been inside one) and abuse is rife, and the elderly are better off staying with family, women are not better off being expected to be 24/7 carers for up to a decade or even longer.

It was better a few generations ago, when families had no choice but to care for their elderly at home, and the elderly weren’t pumped full of antibiotics every time Mother Nature tried to take them out with pneumonia or a UTI, keeping them alive in a pitiful state for years and years.

A few generations ago things worked as intended. Women weren't solo actors, the women in the family worked together to look after the aging population and houses were built to accommodate multi generational living or you all lived within 2 streets of each other. The declining ones you mention did need a care home or a hospital and proper supervision which is beyond the average person. Care homes for old people needing severe care support makes sense. Care homes for other wise functioning old people who need an eye kept on them doesn't.

You're right about the problem of medicine saving people who need to die. It's morbid but keeping Grandpa from Texas Chainsaw alert is cruel to them and to you.
