A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Does that mean charging at people with knives or just carrying one? I haven't left my house without a pocketknife since I was a kid and it's gone from a little 2 inch pen knife to a 4 1/2 spring assisted knife these days. That or the Leatherman. The only time it ever isn't in my pocket is when I have to go to some place with metal detectors like the courthouse or ER (which are few and far between). And no one in my rural area even notices when the knife comes out in public because we all carry knives, either in pockets or purses.

Unite chief Sharon Graham calls Energy Secretary’s net zero plan a ‘disaster’




Sir Keir Starmer must sack Ed Miliband over his approach to net zero, the boss of the Unite union has demanded.

Sharon Graham called the Energy Secretary’s net zero plan a “disaster” and accused him of being “completely irresponsible” with Britain’s energy security.

It was confirmed this morning that one of Britain’s last remaining oil refineries would close despite hopes that Mr Miliband would step in to save it.

Lindsey oil refinery is the source of 10 per cent of the UK’s petrol. Its closure will leave Britain even more dependent on foreign imports.

It is the second refinery to shut in a year after the closure of Grangemouth, Falkirk. Overnight, 125 job losses were announced at Lindsey, affecting almost a third of its workforce.

Asked if she believed it was time for Mr Miliband to go, Ms Graham told The Telegraph: “I think that he has not made a good fist of it.



“I think maybe it is time for him to think that he should move out of this position, because for me, we don’t have time. I’ve got two oil refineries shutting now in less than a year.

“These people here have been told that their jobs are going, yet we know that we need to have fuel in Britain. Where is the money going into this?

“Now if it’s the Treasury that’s stopping it, then maybe we need somebody that’s more vocal for these jobs.

“We need somebody that is going to say ‘we back Britain and I am demanding that we get this money into this area’. Because so far it’s been an absolute disaster zone.”



The remarks are a blow to the Prime Minister on the day of his speech to the Labour conference.

Sir Keir reportedly tried to move Mr Miliband out of his energy brief and into the housing department following Angela Rayner’s resignation, but he refused to go.

Mr Miliband is understood to be poised to reverse Labour’s ban on new oil and gas drilling amid warnings from union bosses that net zero risks crushing British industry.

The Labour manifesto stated that it would not “issue new licences to explore new fields” in the North Sea, but The Sunday Times reported Mr Miliband was considering watering the pledge down.

Ms Graham said that Mr Miliband’s approach to net zero is “a disaster”, adding: “I know I’m being blunt, but when you’ve got a situation where I’ve got workers who woke up this morning and they’ve been made redundant in a refinery that can produce fuel for Britain, for our security, and the Government has been tin-eared, I am hugely frustrated about it.”

She added: “Ed is a very good guy, a nice person and all of that, but the difficulty here is he doesn’t seem to be grasping that you cannot let go of one rope until you’ve got hold of another.

“We are giving up our fuel security. We’re allowing refineries to shut and we’re going to be at the behest of other countries in terms of fuel that is totally irresponsible.”

Lindsey oil refinery was taken over by the Insolvency Service in June, after its owner, Prax Group, went into administration. It supplied petrol, diesel, fuel oil, kerosene, aviation fuel and bitumen. Mr Miliband has since ordered an investigation into the circumstances behind Prax’s collapse.

Michael Shanks, the energy minister, said: “Our thoughts are with the workers, their families and the community who have been badly let down by Lindsey oil refinery’s owners.

“The Official Receiver has made this independent decision now in order to provide employees with as much notice as possible, while concluding the sales process in the coming weeks.

“The majority of the workforce will be retained beyond the end of October and we remain hopeful that a solution will be found that supports jobs on the site long-term.

“The Official Receiver is independently assessing potential bids for the future of the refinery and its assets and has made clear he will continue to work with all bidders with credible and deliverable proposals.”



A spokesman for the Insolvency Service said: “This decision was not taken lightly and follows a thorough review of all aspects of the business, following its insolvency.

“We understand that this a very difficult time for all those affected by this decision, and the Insolvency Service will fully support employees subject to redundancy via the redundancy payments service.”

They added: “There are ongoing discussions with a number of parties to progress bids with the objective of achieving a sale of the business.

“The Official Receiver remains committed to exploring the best possible outcome. To do so, each bid is being considered with care, due diligence and on an equal footing.”

Subsidising this might not make sense to whichever chosen philosophy these zealots follow ( be it green virtue signalling planet saving or the multinational trade is always most efficient and mutually beneficial ) but protecting us from foreign powers and keeping communities dependent on the industry employed and functioning is worth it.
I want pragmatic politicians that understand that their job is to serve the country and its people, not dogmatic idiots who follow a failing philosophy and are so arrogant they won't change course even when it is evident they are doing damage. As you said - treason.

Supporting your essential services so you can survive if another nation collapses is like having a pension. It makes sense. But in this country we pay people not to work. Especially farmers who get paid more for not farming than farming. There's set aside and there's intentionally not farming so you get an extra million quid a year for not doing anything.
