A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Be interested to know when you were there. Was in Kent some 10+ years ago before leaving the UK (right as Labour got in). Quite nice then, lots of local places that I now understand have closed (and were closing prior to Covid) with those allotments being snatched up by big chains.

I was actually down in London with my unimates, and we went to see Alestorm and some other viking metal bands. I can't remember much tbh I was pretty drunk. Good time though.

As an accountant primarily in SMEs my workload shrinks month by month because I have lower costs to accommodate the economy. My area is full of sole traders, and sadly they cannot afford a bookkeeper monthly, and I only do a lot of tax filing now. I was hoping it would last until I file my K1, but it is looking increasingly unlikely. In terms of jobs the sole businesses have cut their staff, and the big businesses cannot accommodate due to costs. My previous workplace was even going to hire me back, but the budget changes destroyed their threshold. The son of one of my clients said how hard it was for him, and he has given up, as student jobs are nonexistent.

Starmer is in a real bind as he cannot cut welfare because there are so many people redundant or fired that he could mobilize them.

As for him, WHY DID YOU HIRE SOMEONE CALLED THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS?! Jesus fucking christ, it's like saying "I hired Satan, he got some ideas and backstabbed me." Even the White House was like, "You sure, bud?" Fabeans are known for backing people who are yes men and not very bright, but he is barely sentient at this point. What do you think their weapon of choice would be? My money's on poison of some sort given their scientific background. I know they're fond of the classics, which means arsenic has a chance, but that's too hard to get away with these days. And it can't be too exotic or new since that really narrows down the list of suspects, and they're smart enough to know that. GHB maybe? I don't think it was gender wars stuff. The thread was pretty heated in the ethics of murdering people. If it was gender wars it would be a shock.

HHH is quite surprising. He's been protected by mods for a long time for the age of his account. Old accounts get to be pricks and don't cop bans like younger ones do.

It's not like it's ever been hard to get a ban. If you piss off the mods in their pet threads you will get banned the same as any other forum. We're lucky that our thread doesn't have a pet mod even if it means it goes get shit up by outsiders repeating the same post.

In other not news. The machete attack I spoke of the other day still has not been featured in any online news sources. I'm going to have to speak to the people who witnessed the aftermath and see if they know what went down. There's other news articles about the place (mostly fluff pieces) but that is completely missing from any local or national news sources.

Tomorrow will be a shit fest. Mr Robinson is protesting and the footy starts back up proper.

The march, one where Mr Robinson has requested his attendees do not wear face masks, is obviously a honey pot designed to mark those willing to cause a fuss and a ruckus.
