A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Most of the people I work with are fucking sick of what we do. You spend all day working away genuinely backbreaking shit laying brick for 8 hours straight. Especially in the summer that we had last year. Shit fucking sucks. People used to at least have the solace knowing that you're doing something good. That maybe the bricks you just laid would be the ones keeping one of your old school friends safe. That maybe this new building would be a desperately needed gp's office or something like that. And it never was. The amount of times you'd end up building houses that are 3b2b fully detached with big gardens was almost 100%. Never did anything fucking helpful to society. Just built houses for the middle class all while the council housing list grows more and more from the lack of any work. The absolute most you'd get is working on an old council house but that'd be it. Rip everything out the house, fix any hard issues and refurbish the entire house in the fucking 5 days at most they'd give you. Every single new build around here is the same. I can't remember the last time I saw any new build in the country that wasn't the same fucking maximised for profit type housing despite how many times the councils would tell you they're building affordable houses. And now what? Not only will those houses never be used by anyone you know, now they won't even be used by anyone from this county. What's the point in giving yourself early onset osteoperosis or whatever the fuck spinal problems all to house people that fucking hate you and your country and would be too apathetic to even spit on you if you were homeless. Long days and hard hours all for the benefit of people that fucking wish you were dead. Though I guess that's just part and parcel of living up north.

I know from just pub gossip policemen are somewhat similar. Look I'll shit on the police as much as the next guy but at the end of the day I don't think the issue is policemen but instead the police as a whole and the governmental/legal backbone of it. People hate police because their favourite rapper told them to. And then on the other side there's people that hate the rest of the shit they do. The police don't want to fucking do half of it. I'm usually firmly in the "nothing ever happens" camp but this year feels different. The whole country feels like it's ready to explode. Every week a new anti-government petition is getting 200k+ votes. The media aren't protecting Labour anymore like they did in the first six months of office. Guaranteed financial oblivion come the next budget. Both of the main parties that have been in power for over a century are beginning to slip to second, third and fourth place in polls. Local elections in Wales are showing Reform outperforming projections with Plaid Cymru barely managing to make a dent in their level of support.

I've had four individual people approach me asking how to get a VPN, each of them normal English men and women, each of them totally tech illiterate. Every single conversation I have with anyone about politics starts with how awful this government is.

Someone mentioned the UK having to be bailed out like Greece in this thread the other day and I haven't managed to shift that sensation that the Covid-19 lockdowns and the 70s Labour governments are about to be made to look like a joke. I had a thought that the Online Safety Bill kind of came out of nowhere, media coverage only really began a week before it came into force. Was the OSA implemented in the way it was to try and head off what might be coming? They didn't waste any time in censoring videos of protests happening. Now they're censoring opposition MPs' posts on social media.

Something's happening and I think I might get some more locks for my front door before winter.

Apparel alone might not be enough, so make sure you raise their opinion of you too. You can tell what gives the biggest boost by the face they make to the corresponding options. If you botch it you might have to bribe them into a high enough score.

Had the pleasure of looking into this a few years back when I had the locks changed after moving in.

I forget the name but there's a 3 and a 5 for a lock. I'd seen the Ultion ones. Ideally, I just want a door which can't be forced open by dark hands within ten seconds.

As for cops, I know a few as in retirees and new recruits (zoomers). The zoomers tend to leave because the pay is shit, and one I talked to described the arresting process for hate speech as "cringe". They're trying to get a lot of the retirees to return but they are not doing it because of the conditions. A new recruit after tax only makes about 21.3k after tuition and taxes are applied. That is only £1,775 a month and most live in or around cities, so 40% of their salary is on rent. Fuck if you want to get spicy after council tax, they get 19k. Gee, I wonder why recruitment is on the floor.

No PL, but a couple of new estates that have been going up in my area over the past several years, a builder I was chatting too who was working on them said the build quality was dreadful. It surprised me because I tend to think with so many new regulations and the onward plod of tech, new builds would mostly be great in most regards (except perhaps size). But he said he didn't think they'd last. Pretty shocking.
