A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I've encountered several older black women in my life - always from either the Carribbean or West Africa- who are decent enough. Church goers,married, who take no shit. The type who came here years back.

I absolutely can't stand that they're here and I fundamentally disagree with the lie that we need them, and tbh if shit hit the fan I would struggle to trust anyone not the same race as I, however I believe a good example is a good example,no matter the origin.

In the case of these women and their families, their thrift, prudence and work ethic - displayed by those individuals, at least- is something which has stuck with me for a number of years.

Somalians,Ethiopians, and Africans however are a whole other story. Can't stand them. And while I dislike the Windrush generation on principle, I dislike these cowardly men, scuttling off from their homes, for personal enrichment and gain, in wholly false pretences, even more.

I came across a Tik Tok trend recently of Africans going on about how they are sick of African relatives back home begging for money and that the bank is closed… won’t be long til the penny drops fully for a couple of these 2nd 3rd gen’s. We’ve just had the Caribbean’s and Indian browns here a bit longer. Although the amount of money they’ve been sending back to Africa this whole time why the fuck we been sending aid there I do not know.

Very very strange how ever since Trump cut funding to USAID (which by the way doesn't stand for US Aid) we've seen the absolute collapse of anti-racism protesters and comment sections of websites turning based overnight. Whatever happened to fifth columnists like Led By Donkeys?

Any time you think "should I post about the virtues of non-whites?" the answer should always be no. Doesn't matter the virtue, doesn't matter the race. They are all unwelcome here and saying anything nice about them only encourages others to side with them. It's like the old saying but in reverse. If you can't say anything bad about them, don't say anything at all. It's exactly the way they act towards us and it's how we have to act towards them.

Has any one read the notice boards in colleges and left websites that advertise the anti-protest gigs? Could we find evidence it all died up post USAID?

Yep it’s hilarious. So much of it links back to that. Even Stonewall is going out of business now. I’m sure I saw some other things about some refugee charity was claiming they had some issues with funding now but can’t remember which one. Police have been referred to an internal complaints commision based on how long it took for them to pursue an investigation AND it happened to be in Leicestershire (paki central) AND not a single peep about the man arrested other than he's in his 70s.

If a Paki DID try and kill a bunch of children then that would be the lit match.

I don't know any 70 year old white men who run summer camps. It has to have been a paki camp.

It’s definitely a weird one. I dont know the village but Melton and Syston is one of the more white areas of Leicestershire, though. Leicester is in the middle trying to do a takeover of Leicestershire though. Because of mismanagement and for housing asylum seekers. Wouldn’t be surprised if they are starting the demographic changes early.

I certainly won't be voting for them, but I'm glad they will split the Left vote.

I actually watched the video (for once…) and he says it’s a non denominational Christian charity that runs the lodge, it’s aimed at low socioeconomic kids from around Nottingham, and it’s used by Pentecostal/evangelicals a lot.
Nottingham has a large and well established black (Caribbean) community that has a lot of such kids and a big Bangladeshi community as well. Unlikely the Muslim community sides would be going to a Christian church charity, so it’s more likely it was black kids from Lenton.
Be interesting to see what comes out of this.
 
So in other news, Starmer is U-turning on Palestine already. LESS THAN 24 FUCKING HOURS!


He basically renegged and said how the hostage reclamation was part of the long-standing deal, when it was not.

Even the left of the party doesn't agree with this and with the OSA and Trump. I think Starmer is starting to realize America is pissed. Trump said in an interview yesterday that Starmer did not talk about Palestine at all, and this decision "surprised" him. Now he is threatening US citizens with fines and kidnapping over hurtful words. I can see Trump sending Vance and Rubio as an envoy to tell him what he thinks.

He can't risk pissing off America at the moment, with an IMF bailout needed as the IMF is largely US-controlled.
