A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I live in a poor shithole area. We were white as you could imagine until they started busing them in a few years ago, council probably got bribed to take them and ofc they would dump them in the rougher areas of the county as can’t possibly shit up the more well off towns.

Escape isn’t an option but they probably hate it here as much as the rest of us do.

BBC seething that they have to report this.

A man has been arrested over a disturbance on an Easyjet flight from Luton to Glasgow Airport.
Police boarded the aircraft after it landed in Glasgow at 08:20 and arrested the 41-year-old.
Footage has been circulating online showing a man on an aircraft shouting "death to America, death to Trump" and "Allahu Akbar" - an Arabic phrase meaning "God is great".
Two men then tackle him and pin him to the floor of the plane. Police Scotland said the footage was being assessed by counter-terrorism officers.
The force said it believed the incident was contained and nobody else was involved.
A spokesperson said a man was arrested and inquiries were ongoing.

The man is seen in the video stood up near the back of the aircraft.

He shouted: 'Stop the plane. Find the bomb on the plane.

'Death to America. Death to Trump.'

He is then heard shouting 'Allahu Akbar' three times. A phrase which means 'God is the greatest' in Arabic.

And Sainsburys have always been mega woke they do the whole "pride" flag thing; I've seen previous adverte with mixed race couples all over place and I've seen an amputee and a woman doing BSL.

Pure propaganda. Don't stand up against the rape gangs, it makes you a wife beater. Who knows what a report of domestic abuse even means? Very easy to make a domestic abuse report but they didn't lead to convictions of any kind. Bent coppers and police state propaganda

Not above average. In Scotland, fully half of all children are known to the police and Children's Reporter via being present in the house during a domestic incident attended by police.

There's actually an important but hidden fault line in UK society: your dad or man doesn't hit you or your mum, and... everyone else. People who don't grow up in, or end up in, violent households consistently vastly underestimate the prevalence of domestic abuse in the UK, particularly in the poorer bits.

(The poor are not more likely to hit their wives for free entertainment. The things that make you poor - substance problems, unemployment, criminal record, lower IQ, poor educational outcomes - are known family/relationship stressors, which do make you more likely to take a swing at your old man. Moreover, the numbers make quite clear that improved socioeconomic status does not in some way inoculate you against being an absolute shitbag. The government are looking into restricting/banning VPNs now after ProtonVPN reported a 1,800% surge in UK registrations for VPN services after the Online Safety Act came into force. NordVPN reported a 1000% surge in UK registrations.

Not only would this completely scupper the ability to hire jeets (as easily), the UK Government uses VPNs themselves for home working.

It's possible. The devil is always in the details though. What does overlap mean? Does it mean they arrested a hundred people for domestic abuse, a hundred people for rioting and found 3 of the individuals were in both? Does it mean that there's a +60% correlation with domestic abuse amongst people who show up to protests compared to the overall population? You didn't link the article (bad @chilli burn ) so I can't check though I doubt they link any actual study I could examine.

However, regardless all movements need to police themselves and gatekeep. Just like people trying to oppose government online censorship or spying need to gatekeep out the loli / paedo crowd. It's fundamental and if you don't do it it will be very quickly used against you.

This movement is no exception.
