A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I was going to save as much as possible, but with how fast it's all going, I am just going to retrain in nursing over there. It's a fraction of the cost and takes 2 years. Unfortunately, none of my financial qualifications carry over, but my other half has a great paycheque.

I am just morally and spiritually eroded at this point, honestly. I don't think this government is going to last to Christmas, honestly, because an IMF bailout will crucify them.

We're building sub-standard new accommodation across the UK that would not have had the proper sign-off years ago. This is what happens when loonies take over - near me, a new development is having to be abandoned because the bog land it's being built on hasn't been sufficiently drained.

The developers are facing a financial arse ache over this, the Council face reprimands from both the Senedd and national Labour Government for not hitting the targets mandated of them.

Interesting, so like with the states, if you are poor, it is hard to move to different counties due to the cost. High tax means services like removals and housing are high, to move far you will need to sacrifice 000s which the English paycheque does not support.

I live in a very rural area, but even those areas have migrants. They sneak them in and tell them to keep a low profile for a few weeks, and they appear. Moving to the countryside is more challenging because the homes tend to be retained, and there is very low stock. If you see building work too it's very rare because as someone with builders in the family. They are offered a pittance, and even the large companies refuse because they're literally making a loss. For example, I live in a protected area. 4 years ago, some homes were being built and are nowhere near done.

The locals said Don't build there, the soil is hell. Talked with the builders in the local cafe, and they said that the foreman was pissed because they made a huge loss as assessments were rushed. What is worse in the completed area, no one is biting on buying the homes because they know they won't be welcomed, and the local council decided to fill 20% with pakis from Birmingham. People are refusing to buy there, and locals have been selling to leave there, and these are liberals too.

Like @SirCliveSinclairdabbing said, I keep my head down and talk with my local parish, nothing inflammatory, etc but stick with the plan on leaving.

Browns and blacks are doing that now. Rural England is no longer the haven it used to be. As care homes go bust they buy up the buildings and drop the immigrants into them. Knowing the main train line in the country will drop them in London and Birmginham for less than £100.

I saw a village that was no joke 95% white turn brown between weekly visits. Pakis sitting on park benches taking photos for social media. Large groups of black men getting off the train together in a place with maybe 2 black families total. It went from a largely white village to a bunch of browns and blacks hanging around the village center. There's reports of men using gardens as toilets now if you watch the local gossip.

I have been wondering about this with moving between British nations. Would an Englishman in Wales be as alien as one in the US? Last time I was on my travels I saw a town that was 95% white and after a few drinks in the local Spoons I mentioned to some guy at the bar that this looks like a lovely place to move to.

One week it was white. The next it wasn't. Look at how they move entire hotels around in a week and imagine it's your home they stop at. You can have 100 foreigners appear overnight and they will hang around the bus stop or public spaces. Then the locals start to avoid the area unless it's essential and then it's more dangerous for people. A local park was smashed up by immigrants within a week of arriving. They had nothing better to do so they broke all the kid's playthings and left needles all over the grass.
