A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's likely the bureaucracy just went ahead with it anyway. Local government suffers the same problem as the national; the unelected bureaucrats, the people who actually make up the functioning of the machine, move to their own rules and set their own agendas, sometimes to the point of completely ignoring what the elected councillors want. Pulp are obviously not better than Oasis or Blur. I do have a soft spot for their song 'A Little Soul' though. When you know the relationship between Jarvis and his dad, it's very poignant and personal. I listen to it now and then, and it makes me want to be a better dad.

Anyway, have we ever had people declare their allegiance in this thread, vis a vis Oasis or Blur? I'll go first.

Despite being northern, Blur are better. Oasis has the swagger, but Blur are just more interesting. They also taught me the word "quango" when I was like 9 years old.

A rapist convicted as part of the Rotherham grooming scandal has been ordered to pay £425,000 in damages to his victim by the High Court.

The grooming survivor, who is known as Liz, started civil proceedings against Asghar Bostan in 2020.

Bostan was jailed for nine years in 2018 following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Liz said she was "proud" to have brought the case and hoped it would show survivors could get justice.

She said she was approached to take the action as a test case.

"I decided to go with it, not having my hopes up, but we managed to get a result," she said.

Her solicitor Robin Tilbrook described it as an "ice-breaker" of a case, which would allow "others to follow".

Asghar Bostan was jailed for raping Liz in 2018

During Bostan's trial in 2018, Liz recounted being raped twice by him at a flat in Rotherham after being given alcohol and drugs.

His prosecution followed the National Crime Agency's Operation Stovewood inquiry into historical sexual abuse in Rotherham.

Liz said despite his conviction she did not believe the judicial process worked for abuse survivors.

"We've been walking around for years and years full of trauma and psychological damage," she said.

She said they had faced a constant battle, but hoped her legal action would show that survivors could come forward and get justice.

"I wanted to give something back not only to myself, but to other survivors and do something not only for Rotherham but for all the UK," she said.

Referring to the damages of £425,934.09 she was awarded, she said it had not "sunk in" yet.

'Never heal the past'​

"I am really, really pleased for the outcome and really, really pleased this might open the floodgates for other survivors.

"It will never heal the past, we will always walk in these shoes, but it is about closing a chapter."

Mr Tilbrook said the key question for bringing action was that the defendant had been convicted, in this case of two counts of rape.

"The damage is endured for the life of the victim therefore the amount of damages are always likely to be very large."

He said his client had been "very brave" and was a "great example to all the other victims".

Liz said: "I am proud this is what I have done and this could help so many people."

Bostan was released from prison in 2022, and the Probation Service said sex offenders faced some of the "strictest licence conditions", adding: "If an offender breaches their conditions we will not hesitate to return them to prison to protect the public."

The lawyer is involved in Nationalist politics as well. Looks like he is looking to go after more of the bastards also.

The biggest issue with the benefits system is the fundamental lack of jobs across the UK, and I mean jobs not "jobs". Every single fucking company in the UK is running as lean as possible because either A) they can't afford to hire more or B) they're working by the retarded effectiveness principle where you can just work the same 4 people to death instead of having a team of 8.

Where are the government entry level jobs where school leavers can go? Nowhere, the Civil Service, police, NHS, local council etc. are ALL cutting jobs. Your local McDonalds and Wetherspoons has an application list that's 20k names long. You want to get a minimum wage admin job? Have you got a Business Administration Level 2? No? Oh, then good luck with your job search

So what happens when someone doesn't manage to get a graduate job in a year? They're now in the same pool as fresh graduates from the next year, fucking them over harder and making them more unemployable by the week. There's no doubt in my mind this is why the absolute rise in PIP and unemployment has gone bezerk, people have done well in school, done well in 6th form, done well in University to be in contention with a billion people for the same minimum wage job, naturally a load are going to give up and become lifelong PIP/Doleys.

Make more government jobs, even if they're fucking bloat jobs that don't really do much and the economy will begin to thrive again. The bonus? On paper more work will actually fucking get done. More passports will be processed, more driving licences will be processed, more admin in mission critical roles will be processed. Instead the government is wanting more AI to replace the entry level posts which is going to make the situation even worse.

I'd say it's even worse than that, loads of those minimum wage jobs have gone to being zero hours not enough to live on without benefits still or gig economy sub minimum wage done by illegals. The handful of employers trying to do the right thing are just being out priced and replaced by the ones bending and breaking the law in the way they employ people.

Also loads of supermarket jobs and things only want people until 21 when the minimum wage goes from £10 to £12.21 and if they can 16-17yo or apprentices £7.55 often churning out some worthless in-house qualification with no job after the apprentice period ends.

They need to go hard to break the gig economy and zero hours and other shit jobs to level the playing field again but they won't as all the worst offenders are always party donors.

I like both Blur and Oasis but I wouldn't consider either of them to be one of my favourite bands.

Oasis started off essentially carrying on the swagger that the world was missing from The Stone Roses splitting up (Second Coming is actually pretty fucking good, even though I will say it has got its own fair share of ambient wankery) and while Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger have been overplayed to absolute fucking death, they're still pretty good tracks. Live Forever and Rock and Roll Star are regular staples in my "Perk yourself the fuck up" playlists and yes, I'm painfully aware that they were shit from the third album onwards but I don't think Blur had as high peaks as Oasis did at the start.

Blur on the other hand were HEAVILY inspired by jangly post punk bands like XTC and Cardiacs (who are both significantly better than them) but still managed to retain their fun throughout their mainstream success. People like to say that Blur are the better 'albums' band than Oasis but honestly they were about the same, with Blur really coming into their own between Modern Life is Rubbish to The Great Escape. Everything after that was a mix of fun singles mixed in between trash as it felt like the band had no fucking clue which direction it wanted to go into, hence why breaking up to start Gorillaz was the best career change for Alburn.

Oasis's decline happened because they got rich and no longer had all the time in the world to write tracks that had the bite of the past, Blur's decline happened because they got in a rut and became the sad middle class wankers they were originally writing songs about. Both things similtaniously are why Arctic Monkeys are shite.

I think Britpop was the last real 'event' in music as after 2000 we've had ever worse 'tunes' and the attitude has gone from 'we need to create something that people will remember' to 'well, if people don't get it, they are the morons.'

Between the 50s and 90s, we had some of the best musicians ever - Elvis, The Beatles, Queen... sadly, we'll likely never see anything like them again or it'll be eons into the future before anything as good comes along.

When 'I Glued My Balls To My Butthole Again' was one of the most listened to songs of 2024, and that's an AI generated bit of music, then quite frankly I'd rather listen to AI or do my own - people rave about 'The Script' who played in Cardiff last night and 'The 1975'... nah, not bad but not my thing.

Good win. I'm not getting my hopes up quite yet with reform, but still open to it being the next necessary step. If nige can't go far enough then either enough nationalists infiltrate to take it futher, OR if it fails, I think it will only push the people to pick an even harder right alternative.

I think the immigration issue is going to keep pushing more and more people into being willing to counteance the nationalistic right and so either way we should keep moving in the right direction
