A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Again, most time I have to apply for a new job I have to provide five to seven years of employment history that is checked by the firm to make sure I wasn’t lying. Why aren’t simple checks like this in place for people wanting to be politicians? Why the hell aren’t they carried out before offering them cabinet positions?

Assuming some of them have elevated security clearances as well? They should be checked by the intelligence services surely? I know a couple of people who got jobs at GCHQ and what have you and they all had their lives fine through with a fine tooth comb. They were mathematicians and even the people they’d met and done a random student poster with in their class they had investigated because they were Russian. I cannot believe that intelligence don’t background check prospective MPs?? I mean of course they do, right? Which means they simply don’t care about the lies and deception. That is to me a far worse thing because we all know politicians are grubby little wretches with their snouts in the trough but intelligence allowing them to lie like that? That’s a big deal.

I can see a lot of the less problematic Tories defecting, I would like to see Hunt defect there as he was a sound Chancellor. The blessing in disguise for Reform is that with both parties floundering they are getting crushed under their enormous admin costs. We are in a reality where the Conservatives could go bankrupt meaning they cannot afford to mobilize their campaigns.

His Ukraine policy is stupid and ill-timed because like always he can never read the room. A lot of people especially Reform supporters tend to be speculative of Zelensky but also the futile nature of Ukraine. Zelensky has shown his entitlement when it comes to the USA's contributions to the war. There are some by-elections and Reform will most likely sweep hard, Starm if in power will probably face no-confidence shit like this always triggers no-confidence votes. I predict this is when the Torie defections will start or in April. I think they’ll just take the whip off them and hope they doesn’t resign as MPs so they can rejoin in the future as the last thing they want is Reform winning a by-election.

Honestly, if elected politicians had to pass enhanced clearance, they.... couldn't. Modern day politics is a game of getting into bed with some very very fucking dubious people for money, clout, or both. MI5 more or less exists to collect info on our elected politicos, and has done for many decades. The state knows these people are all bought and sold, and who by. But the alternative - blacklisting the 'security unacceptable' - is such a base level sodomisation of our democracy that we can't live with that. It would bar forever the members of any populist, insurgent or just generally awkward cunt party from election, and their voters from representation in the political process. If you think democracy and getting to vote for whoever you actually want to vote for has any function, any moral value, then you have to let dodgy bastards run for elected office. What puzzles me is why nobody took anyone on cabinet aside and said ‘this will come back to bite you; correct it now.’ This is basic stuff that there’s no need to not correct. She already had the job, the lowest risk thing to do would be ‘oh sorry that’s a typo, must have been a cut and paste error let me fix that.’ Leaving the lie there gives someone an edge over her. Which maybe is the point. But it’s just odd.
This would have been picked up in any review, even the most casual pleb level reference check would pick this up. but nobody did anything with that knowledge.
