A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

Always treat the police respectfully and respond to any questions about yourself. Don't talk about the incident but go along with them booking you if you're in cuffs and about to be in a cell. There is nothing to be gained from kicking off once you've been put in the back of a van. If you do kick off you can end up in cuffs on the floor for hours laying in your own piss. The cops are bastards and if you start disrespecting them they will make the situation worse to spite you.

The internet has made everyone retarded. When you see videos there is always 10 people filming the same thing in a crowd. And all that footage is going into facial recognition software to fuck people over. Any group with common sense would demand phones are put down but that's not how things are now. The only upside is if they do that there will be so many cases it'll never get done unless it's literally "Name, address, you get 3 years" over and over. Which is what I'm expecting to happen and if it does it will only enrage more people.

Interesting how many of us have left the riot thread to it's self. It's turned into Americans wanking and few people scouting for content. Does any one have a list of what damage has been done and known causalities? Tomorrow will be interesting. Either this cools off as a weekend of riots or the 2 hotel torchings today lead to a more focused riot where they will challenge the police head on until they break through and start burning more hotels. This isn't true at all, it's not the so-called "sleepy village fucks", it is upper-middle class and upper class people living in relatively well-off areas of the UK such as Bristol, every Ruralite I've spoken to either supports these riots whole-heartedly or in a conflicted manner.

It’s weird.

Granted it’s not hit where I live yet and the people who live in cities were it has kicked off live in the nice parts on the outskirts, but there does seem to be an effort by the petite bourgeoisie to pretend this isn’t happening.

I've talked to some blokes on my street and they're in support of it, they don't condone anything like the looting but they agree with the overall message.
